Trustee Apointment, Renovations Face Howard College <\/p>\n

Replacement and renovation will be the main topics of discussion when
\nHoward College trustees hold their monthly meeting at 12:30 p.m.
\nMonday in the Student Union Building Tumbleweed Room. <\/p>\n
The board is expected to begin the process of finding a replacement
\nfor long-time District 4 trustee Don McKinney, who recently died
\nfollowing a long illness, as well as hear an update on the progress of
\na campus wide renovation project. <\/p>\n
College President Dr. Cheryl Sparks said finding a replacement for
\nMcKinney will likely take two or three months. <\/p>\n
If trustees follow the same procedure as they did following the
\nOctober death of trustee Harold Davis, they will name a search
\ncommittee to find candidates for the position, then recommend a
\nsuccessor to the full board for action. <\/p>\n
Tentatively, officials should have a recommendation for the board in
\nFebruary, with the new trustee being officially appointed in March,
\nSparks said. <\/p>\n
Whoever is appointed to succeed McKinney must be a resident of
\nDistrict 4, which covers the northeast quandrant of Howard County.
\nThat area includes parts of Big Spring and the communities of Coahoma
\nand Vincent. <\/p>\n
Once appointed, the new trustee would serve until 2010, at which time
\nhe or she could stand for election to fill the remainder of McKinney’s
\nunexpired term, which runs through 2012, Sparks said. <\/p>\n
On the renovation front, trustees will hear a progress report on work
\nthat is figuratively turning the Big Spring campus into a hard hat
\nzone. <\/p>\n
Because of ongoing or planned projects, many offices and classes have
\nhad to take up temporary residence elsewhere. For example, many
\nbusinesses offices have been transplanted from the administration
\nbuilding annex, which is undergoing reconstruction, to the East Room
\nof Garrett Coliseum. <\/p>\n
Some classes have been pushed off campus altogether \u2014 some
\ncontinuing education courses are now being offered at the Big Spring
\nMall while certified nurse’s aide classes are being held at the Texas
\nState Veterans Home and other courses have been moved to SouthWest
\nCollegiate Institute for the Deaf, Sparks noted. <\/p>\n
\u201cAnd we’re preparing to displace some other programs, as well,\u201d
\nshe said. <\/p>\n
The next major project on tap is the addition of a wing to the
\nscience building. Work is expected to begin within the next few weeks,
\nSparks said. <\/p>\n
Other projects to follow include renovation work on the Horace
\nGarrett building, the main administration building wing and the
\nstudent union building, which will mean even more classroom
\ndisruption. <\/p>\n
Sparks said officials are working overtime to minimize the effect of
\nall this moving around. <\/p>\n
\u201cOur main goal is to do our best not to disrupt the learning
\nprocess of our students,\u201d she said. \u201cBecause of that, we’re going
\nto do as much of the work as we can over the summer … We are not
\ngoing to close or delay any classes.\u201d <\/p>\n
In other business, trustees will consider: <\/p>\n
\u2022 Change orders for the new Workforce Training Center at SWCID. <\/p>\n
\u2022 Bids and handbook and catalog changes. <\/p>\n
\u2022 The annual college president evaluation. <\/p>\n
