Obituary: Irma Kleeb Young<\/p>\n
Young, Irma Kleeb was born in Ingleside, Texas 83 years ago. She
\nwalked into the loving arms of the Lord on February 13th after a long
\nillness. From humble beginnings in a rural Texas town as the child of
\nDeaf parents, Irma experienced the challenges faced by the Deaf and
\nHearing Impaired everyday. After years spent as an empowering advocate
\nfor the Deaf Community\u2014serving as a community interpreter, lobbying
\nCongress to improve rights for the Deaf and Hearing Impaired as well
\nas helping found the Knoxville Center of the Deaf\u2014Irma pioneered the
\nworld\u2019s first four year degree program for professional sign
\nlanguage interpreters at Maryville College serving as Assistant
\nProfessor of Sign Language Interpreting for a number of years
\nbeginning in 1974. She considered her service to the Deaf and Hearing
\nImpaired as a calling and lived to praise God with everything she did.<\/p>\n
She is preceded in death by her husband, Dewey W. Young, her parents,
\nMaurice and Minnie Secoy, and sister, Flora Moody. Irma will also be
\nmissed by Sons, Rev. Donald Kleeb (wife Paula) of Brandon, MS and
\nLarry Kleeb (wife Rosalie) of Tucson, AZ; Daughters, Janet Cheney
\n(husband Pete) and Vicki Nored of Knoxville, TN; and Step-Daughters,
\nLinda Rhea, Barbara Sherrod (husband Bud), and Jo Roy (husband Kelly)
\nof Knoxville, TN as well as Teresa Bunjan (husband Bob) of St. Louis,
\nMO; in addition to numerous nieces and nephews, 14 Grandchildren, 11
\nGreat-Grandchildren, and her devoted dog Charlie.<\/p>\n
Services will take place on Friday February 20th at First Baptist
\nConcord with the receiving of friends from 5-7pm and a \u201cCelebration
\nof Life\u201d service to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make
\ncontributions to The Knoxville Center of the Deaf (3731 Martin Mill
\nPike Knoxville, TN 37920), First Baptist Concord (11704 Kingston Pike
\nKnoxville, TN 37934), and the Sign Language Interpreter Degree Program
\nat Maryville College (Office of Advancement 502 E. Lamar Alexander
\nPkwy Maryville, TN 37804, designate donations specifically for the
\n\u201cSign Language Interpreter Degree Program\u201d).<\/p>\n
Brief Note: Irma Kleeb Young was wonderful interpreter… Interpreted
\nin Fort Worth area around 1960’s.<\/p>\n
She helped many people become interpreters. Later she founded 4-year
\nInterpreter Education major at Maryville College in Tenn. By Rob
