Students Converge to Experience Art and Creative Expression for
\nARTSign 2009 at the Texas School for the Deaf<\/p>\n
Austin, Texas FEBRUARY 26, 2009 High school students from deaf
\nschools in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, New Mexico and Texas
\nconverge in Austin today for a weekend of complete art immersion.<\/p>\n
ARTSign 2009 is a symposium bringing deaf and hard of hearing high
\nschool students from Texas and surrounding states to participate in
\nart workshops, performances, and exhibits. Demonstrations and
\nworkshops will feature many deaf professional and amateur artists as
\nteachers. Other activities include live drama and musical performances
\nand visits to area art museums \u2013 including a stop at the Blanton
\nMuseum of Art and the Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas.<\/p>\n
Since 1987, ArtSign has been held bi-annually with hosting honors
\nrotating among the five participating schools. This year, the Texas
\nSchool for the Deaf (TSD) has assembled an impressive list of
\npresenting artists and talented performers.<\/p>\n
Renowned comedian\/performer, CJ Jones, will be the master of
\nceremonies for the weekend and lead drama workshops with students. For
\nmore than 30 years, Jones has shared his talents with deaf and hearing
\nstudents at schools, events, and universities across the country and
\naround the world. Having appeared on Broadway, in television, video,
\nand on the big screen, he has experienced what he calls the \u201cdouble
\nwhammy\u201d of being an actor who is both deaf and black. Jones
\nvigorously spreads the message to students and adults alike, that
\nbeing different does not mean being less worthwhile.<\/p>\n
With a full weekend of experiential opportunities and hands-on
\nactivities alongside artists, students attending ARTSign will express
\nthemselves in photography, video technology, jewelry, mosaics,
\nculinary arts, creative drama and musical interpretations using
\nAmerican Sign Language, and more. The spotlight turns on the students
\nto close each evening by showcasing their talents in live performances
\nand film productions. The goal of ARTSign is to expose young adults to
\nas much art, in as many forms possible in a short weekend, and help
\nbridge the gap at a time when art programs in many schools are
\nstruggling.<\/p>\n
With a strong belief in culture and community at TSD, students form a
\nunique identity based on their individual strengths and talents. At
