Voter’s Workshop for People with Disabilities in Fort Worth<\/p>\n
Hello Everyone,<\/p>\n
We are preparing to organize another Voter’s Workshop for People with
\nDisabilities. It is tentatively scheduled for April 2 or 4 at
\nArborlawn United Methodist Church in Fort Worth. We are in the process
\nof organizing a blog site to remind people about their voting rights,
\nto register to vote and about the voting process. Local elections are
\nimportant. A city council can change the direction of a city and
\ninclude people with disabilities in their vision. So, it is important
\nfor people with disabilities to be involved in and vote in their local
\nelections. The decisions made at the local level affect our daily
\nlives.<\/p>\n
I want to invite you to a Voting Workshop Prep Meeting on Thursday,
\nMarch 12, 2009, at 6:30 PM. The workshop will be basically the same as
\nthe first workshop, including exhibit tables for nonprofit
\norganizations that support and provide services for the different
\ndisabilities. The exhibit tables and workshop will be free of charge.
\nHowever, I will need your help getting out the word and getting people
\nto attend. I would like to discuss ways to do that on March 12th, to
\nlearn about your thoughts and ideas, and to share mine about this
\ntraining and another training I would like to do in the future
\nfocusing on developing leadership skills.<\/p>\n
Since the first voting workshop in September, I have been appointed
\nto the Mayor’s Commission on Human Relations in Fort Worth. I was
\nsworn in last month. On February 3, the Fort Worth City Council
\nunanimously passed a resolution in support of accessibility to city
\nservices for the deaf and hard of hearing community. I am interested
\nin the needs of people with disabilities in Fort Worth and North Texas
\nand how I can best be of help as a Fort Worth Commissioner. I am
\nhoping that the Voting Workshop will be an inspiration for other
\npersons with disabilities to apply for appointed positions and run for
\npublic office.<\/p>\n
