Amazing things happen when the worlds of American Sign Language and
\npopular music meet: A beautiful new art form is created, and music
\nculture is finally made accessible to millions of Deaf and hard of
\nhearing people.<\/p>\n
Through a series of groundbreaking videos, the Deaf Performing
\nArtists Network (D-PAN) has shown that music and music culture
\naren\u2019t necessarily limited to hearing individuals only. By creating
\nASL-centric videos for songs by artists such as John Mayer, Christina
\nAguilera, and Eminem, D-PAN has expanded the communication and
\nartistic possibilities of both sign language and the music video,
\nwhile creating performing and working opportunities for Deaf artists
\nand technicians.<\/p>\n
We\u2019d like to extend a special invitation to you and everyone else
\ninterested to join D-PAN\u2019s Sean Forbes for a special performance and
\npresentation at Borders Books and Music, 4477 South Lamar, Austin TX
\n(512-891-8974), on Sunday, March 8th at 2:00pm. Sean will explain the
\nconcepts and process behind an ASL video, discuss his personal
\nexperience as a Deaf performer, and provide a live demonstration of
\nASL\u2019s beauty and power in a musical context.<\/p>\n
We would be happy to see you there. Just as importantly, we would
\nappreciate any help you might be able to provide in making other
\ninterested people aware of this event. Included below is an invitation
\nand detailed information concerning this appearance. If you feel so

About D-PAN<\/p>\n
The Deaf Performing Artists Network is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
\norganization dedicated to advancing cultural, artistic, and media
\naccessibility for Deaf and hard of hearing individuals, to the
\npromotion of creative works by Deaf artists and performers, and to the
\nprofessional advancement of talented Deaf and hard of hearing
\nperformers, creators, technicians and others within the music and
\nmedia arts. D-PAN is headquartered in Ferndale, Michigan.<\/p>\n
About Sean Forbes<\/p>\n
Sean Forbes is the co-founder of the Deaf Performing Artists\u2019
\nNetwork, as well as its first performing member. The child of two
\nmusical parents, Sean suffered permanent hearing loss at one year of
\nage, but nonetheless pursued a lifelong aspiration towards a career in
\nthe music industry. Recognizing both the lack of opportunity within
\nthe industry and the extensive need for accessibility to music and
\nmusic culture for the deaf community, he conceived the idea of
\nASL-enhanced music videos. He currently serves as D-PAN\u2019s creative
\nliaison to the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. A graduate of
\nLahser High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, Sean attended
\nRochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, New York and graduated
\nin 2008 with a Bachelors Degree in Multidisciplinary Studies.<\/p>\n
Sean and D-PAN were recently featured on CNN\u2019s popular \u201cYoung
