7:00 – 8:30 p.m. Father Tom Coughlin, the only Deaf man ever yet
\nordained as a Roman Catholic priest, will present information about
\n“Mutism: The Darkside of Deafness” and share his personal journey to
\nbecome a priest and his current work to mentor Deaf Apostolates in the
\nhopes of encouraging future priests for Deaf congregations. <\/p>\n
8:30 – 9:00 p.m. Formal question and answer with Fr. Tom Coughlin<\/p>\n
9:00 – 10:00 p.m. Informal discussion as participants exit into
\nStudent Center<\/p>\n
About our presenter:<\/p>\n
Fr. Coughlin was born to deaf parents and maternal grandparents in
\nnorthern New York near Quebec border in 1947 and obtained his High
\nSchool education at St. Mary’s School for the Deaf in Buffalo, NY, BA
\ndegree in English from Gallaudet University; MA in Theology from the
\nCatholic University of Washington, D.C. He was ordained as the first
\ndeaf priest in North America and worked several years as home
\nmissionary priest for the International Catholic Deaf Association. He
\npurchased a bankrupt resort hotel in Old Forge, New York in 1981,
\nconverting the 9 acre waterfront hotel into Camp Mark Seven, a
\nCatholic deaf youth camp. In 1996, he became a Registered Nurse for
\nCamp Mark Seven and worked also as School Nurse at Schools for the
\nDeaf. In 2004, with Bishop Vigneron of Oakland, California assistance,
\nhe formed a new religious congregation for deaf and hearing religious
\nvocations: The Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate.
\nCurrently the congregation was relocated to San Antonio and there are
\nnine members in the community. Father Coughlin continues to serve as
\nPrior General of the congregation and works as Director of the Deaf
\nApostolate at San Francisco di Paola Church in downtown San Antonio
\nand as a chaplain and Registered Nurse at Camp Mark Seven in Old Forge
\nduring the summer months.<\/p>\n
