This year the event is in the Student<br \/>\nCenter, downhill on the lower campus, between the San Antonio River,<br \/>\nand Hildebrand and Broadway streets, near Our Lady of Lourdes Grotto<br \/>\non campus.}(15 on university map:<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.uiw.edu\/map\/maplarge.html)<\/p>\n<p>4301 Broadway, San Antonio, Texas, accessible by VIA bus routes 7,8,<br \/>\n10, 14, 509<\/p>\n<p>University of the Incarnate Word Deaf Awareness Night 2009<\/p>\n<p>Thursday, March 26, Marian Hall Ballroom<\/p>\n<p>Open to all interested persons, with no admission fee<\/p>\n<p>co-sponsored by the Campus Activities Board, Walk, Roll &#038; Read<br \/>\nstudent organization, UIW Provost Dr. Denise Doyle, UIW Chancellor Sr.<br \/>\nHelena Monahan, and UIW Dean of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences<br \/>\nDr. Bob Connelly<\/p>\n<p>6:00 p.m. Doors open<\/p>\n<p>6:30 p.m. Refreshments available in front hallway of Marian Hall<br \/>\n(outside the ballroom)<\/p>\n<p>6:50 p.m. introduction of co-sponsoring organizations<\/p>\n<p>6:55 p.m. Opening prayer by UIW Chancellor Sister Helena Monahan<\/p>\n<p>7:00 &#8211; 8:30 p.m. Father Tom Coughlin, the only Deaf man ever yet<br \/>\nordained as a Roman Catholic priest, will present information about<br \/>\n&#8220;Mutism: The Darkside of Deafness&#8221; and share his personal journey to<br \/>\nbecome a priest and his current work to mentor Deaf Apostolates in the<br \/>\nhopes of encouraging future priests for Deaf congregations. <\/p>\n<p>8:30 &#8211; 9:00 p.m. Formal question and answer with Fr. Tom Coughlin<\/p>\n<p>9:00 &#8211; 10:00 p.m. Informal discussion as participants exit into<br \/>\nStudent Center<\/p>\n<p>About our presenter:<\/p>\n<p>Fr. Coughlin was born to deaf parents and maternal grandparents in<br \/>\nnorthern New York near Quebec border in 1947 and obtained his High<br \/>\nSchool education at St. Mary&#8217;s School for the Deaf in Buffalo, NY, BA<br \/>\ndegree in English from Gallaudet University; MA in Theology from the<br \/>\nCatholic University of Washington, D.C. He was ordained as the first<br \/>\ndeaf priest in North America and worked several years as home<br \/>\nmissionary priest for the International Catholic Deaf Association. He<br \/>\npurchased a bankrupt resort hotel in Old Forge, New York in 1981,<br \/>\nconverting the 9 acre waterfront hotel into Camp Mark Seven, a<br \/>\nCatholic deaf youth camp. In 1996, he became a Registered Nurse for<br \/>\nCamp Mark Seven and worked also as School Nurse at Schools for the<br \/>\nDeaf. In 2004, with Bishop Vigneron of Oakland, California assistance,<br \/>\nhe formed a new religious congregation for deaf and hearing religious<br \/>\nvocations: The Dominican Missionaries for the Deaf Apostolate.<br \/>\nCurrently the congregation was relocated to San Antonio and there are<br \/>\nnine members in the community.
