JOB TITLE: Basic Interpreter WAGE\/HOUR STATUS: $14.00\/hr minimum<\/p>\n
REPORTS TO: Lead Interpreter and\/or Deaf Education Coordinator<\/p>\n
DEPT.\/SCHOOL: Regional Day School Program for the Deaf<\/p>\n
PRIMARY PURPOSE:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Interpret in sign language all communication that occurs in the
\nclassroom for students who are deaf or hard of hearing and require
\ntotal communication. Assist the teacher in reverse interpreting
\ncomments, questions, or responses by these students. Work under the
\nsupervision of a teacher\/team leader\/ supervisor certified in
\neducation of the deaf and\/or hard of hearing.<\/p>\n
QUALIFICATIONS:<\/p>\n
Education\/Certification:<\/p>\n
\u2022 High school diploma or equivalent<\/p>\n
\u2022 Licensed by the Board for Evaluation of Interpreters under the
\nauspices of the Texas Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing or
\nby the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf<\/p>\n
Special Knowledge\/Skills:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Ability to work well with children<\/p>\n
\u2022 Ability to interpret in or willingness to learn SEE 2 sign system<\/p>\n
\u2022 Knowledge of general office equipment<\/p>\n
\u2022 Willingness to execute written employment contract with Plano ISD<\/p>\n
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Uphold and enforce school rules, administrative regulations, and
\nstate and local board policy.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Assist the student in interpreting and\/or reversing lectures,
\nquestions\/answers, discussions, etc.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Work with individual students or small groups to communicate in
\nthe classroom and to complete assignments as assigned by the lead
\ninterpreter or team leader.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Assist in supervising students throughout the school day, both
\ninside and outside the classroom as assigned by the lead interpreter
\nor team leader.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Keep the teacher informed of any special needs or problems of
\nindividual students if deemed necessary by the lead interpreter or
\nteam leader.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Assist in maintaining a neat and orderly classroom.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Assist in inventory, care, and maintenance of equipment.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Participate in staff development training programs, faculty
\nmeetings, and special events, as needed.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Provide orientation and assistance to substitute teachers.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Follow all rules, regulations, and policies of Plano ISD and
\nfollow directives from superiors.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Follow attendance policy as assigned by supervisor.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Perform other functions that may be assigned by the
\nAdministration and\/or supervisor.<\/p>\n
EQUIPMENT USED:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Uses copier, typewriter, computer, laminator, TDD or Texas Relay,
\nand audiovisual equipment including captioning equipment<\/p>\n
WORKING CONDITIONS:<\/p>\n
Mental Demands:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Ability to communicate effectively (verbal and written);
\ninterpret policy, procedures, and data; coordinate district functions;
\nmaintain emotional control under stress.<\/p>\n
Physical Demands\/Environmental Factors:<\/p>\n
\u2022 Frequent districtwide and statewide travel; occasional prolonged
\nand irregular hours.<\/p>\n
\u2022 Frequent standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and
\npulling. Prolonged use of computer and repetitive hand motions.
\nOccasional lifting up to 50 pounds.<\/p>\n
