The Social Security Administration recently received funding to hire
\na significant number of employees throughout the country. This hiring
\ninitiative offers a unique opportunity for individuals with
\ndisabilities who may want to get a job with SSA. These jobs will be at
\nvarious skill levels including a number of entry-level positions.<\/p>\n
SSA will be holding a national teleconference on this issue
\nspecifically for Employment Networks, State Vocational Rehabilitation
\nStaff and others who help people with disabilities go to work on
\nTuesday, April 21, 2009 from 1:00 to 2:30 PM EST. This session will
\nbuild upon an earlier Webinar and provide more details regarding the
\ninitiative. A guest speaker from the Equal Employment Opportunity
\nCommission will also discuss the Schedule A Hiring Authority. Please

What kinds of jobs is SSA offering?<\/p>\n
SSA is recruiting employees to work in field offices and teleservice
\ncenters where they will assist the public by phone and in person with
\na wide variety of program related activities such as filing claims,
\napplying for new or replacement Social Security cards and other types
\nof inquiries. SSA also is recruiting employees to work in Program
\nService Centers where they will process claims and to work in hearings
\noffices in legal and paralegal positions.<\/p>\n
Where are these jobs located?<\/p>\n
All across the United States; for example, some are in the 1,300
\nlocal SSA field offices or SSA hearings offices, some in the 37
\nteleservice centers nationwide, some in SSA\u2019s 6 program service
\ncenters and some at SSA headquarters in the Baltimore area.<\/p>\n
How will SSA recruit?<\/p>\n
SSA will use a variety of avenues to recruit and hire people with
\ndisabilities. In particular, the Agency is reaching out to Ticket to
\nWork Ticket Holders who are trying to return to work, veterans with
\ndisabilities through programs such as the Wounded Warrior transitional
\nprogram, and students with disabilities. Many individuals with
\ndisabilities will qualify for consideration under a special placement
\nauthority called \u201cSchedule A.\u201d<\/p>\n
How can I tell if an individual is eligible for Schedule A?<\/p>\n
A person is Schedule A eligible if s\/he has documentation
\nestablishing both a disability and \u201cjob readiness.\u201d<\/p>\n
Who can provide this documentation?<\/p>\n
o Proof of a disability can be provided by a licensed medical
\nprofessional or any Federal agency, state agency, or agency of the
\nDistrict of Columbia or a US territory that issues or provides
\ndisability benefits. A recent benefit status letter is acceptable from
\na Social Security Disability Insurance or Supplemental Security Income
\ndisability beneficiary.<\/p>\n
o Proof of job readiness can be provided by a licensed vocational
\nrehabilitation specialist working with a State Vocational
\nRehabilitation agency or an Employment Network under the Ticket to
\nWork program.<\/p>\n
