The competition, featuring MATHCOUNTS problems, was held<br \/>\nApril 4 at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf on the RIT<br \/>\ncampus in Rochester, New York.<\/p>\n<p>This competition \u2013 specifically for middle school students who are<br \/>\ndeaf or hard of hearing \u2013 is designed to promote math as fun and<br \/>\nengaging.<\/p>\n<p>The competition had three rounds that tested speed, accuracy,<br \/>\nteamwork and additional \u201cmathletic\u201d skills. All winners received a<br \/>\nplaque and trophy; first-place winners also received $100;<br \/>\nsecond-place winners received $75 and third-place winners received<br \/>\n$50.<\/p>\n<p>Top scorers<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 First place: Ted Zoerner, Venado Middle School, Irvine, Calif.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Second place: Vivian Chen, Haggard Middle School, Plano, Texas.<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Third place: Jason Antal, Florida School for the Deaf, St.<br \/>\nAugustine, Fla.<\/p>\n<p>Top Teams<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 First place: Texas School for the Deaf, Austin (Maggie Kopp, Ilan<br \/>\nBen-Moshe, John McClymond and Chad Cummings).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Second place: Haggard Middle School, Plano, Texas (Vivian Chen,<br \/>\nCasey Lyon, Sam Bowerman and Margaret Teague).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Third place: Venado Middle School, Irvine, Calif. (Ted Zoerner,<br \/>\nTyler Pugeda and Carly Zwick).<\/p>\n<p>Top Scorer<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Maggie Kopp, Texas School for the Deaf, Austin.<\/p>\n<p>Team with most spirit<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Top Team: Illinois School for the Deaf, Jacksonville (Austin<br \/>\nBernal, Rebecca Hoffman, Jacob Bowen and Lorenzo Turner).<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Honorable mention: Texas School for the Deaf, Austin (Maggie<br \/>\nKopp, Ilan Ben-Moshe, John McClymond and Chad Cummings).<\/p>\n<p>MATHCOUNTS is a national enrichment, coaching and competition program<br \/>\nthat promotes middle school mathematics achievement through grassroots<br \/>\ninvolvement in every U.S. state and territory.
