It features Joseph Bresee, M.D., Chief of the Epidemiology &#038;<br \/>\nPrevention Branch in the Center for Disease Control\u2019s Influenza<br \/>\nDivision. The video runs approximately 5 \u00bd minutes. To start the<br \/>\ncaptions, find the box at the far right on the bottom of the screen<br \/>\nwhich has an arrow icon. It will give you a \u201cCC\u201d symbol to click<br \/>\non.<\/p>\n<p>The video tells you what swine flu is, where it comes from, what the<br \/>\nsymptoms and treatments are and how long people with swine flu can be<br \/>\ncontagious. Dr. Breese gives information on what steps to take to<br \/>\navoid catching the virus, what to do if you think you have become<br \/>\ninfected, and warning signs that should lead you to seek emergency<br \/>\nmedical care. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g5t1r7yG7rM&#038;feature=featured \">http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=g5t1r7yG7rM&#038;feature=featured <\/a><\/p>\n<p>What You Need to Know About Swine Flu<\/p>\n<p>As you have undoubtedly heard, there have been several confirmed<br \/>\ncases (66 nationwide at this time, including one death in Texas) of<br \/>\nswine flu in the U.S. As health experts around the world seek to<br \/>\nbetter understand the scope and severity of the swine flu outbreak, we<br \/>\nthought it would be useful to share some basic facts about the flu<br \/>\nwith you.<\/p>\n<p>About Swine Flu:<\/p>\n<p>Swine flu is caused by Type A influenza and is a respiratory disease<br \/>\nin pigs. Humans can become infected with the virus by coming into<br \/>\ncontact with humans or pigs carrying swine flu.<\/p>\n<p>Symptoms:<\/p>\n<p>Those infected may experience flu-like symptoms such as lethargy,<br \/>\nlack of appetite, cough, runny nose, fever, muscle aches, and<br \/>\nsometimes nausea and vomiting.<\/p>\n<p>It is important to note that you cannot get swine flu from eating<br \/>\npork that is cooked to the recommended temperature of 160 degrees.<\/p>\n<p>Treatment:<\/p>\n<p>If you are not feeling well, stay home and avoid contact with others.<br \/>\nPlease also be sure to visit your doctor as soon as possible. If<br \/>\ncaught within the first 48 hours, medications such as Tamiflu and<br \/>\nRelenza can decrease the time of illness and lessen the symptoms. It<br \/>\nis also important for the doctor to make sure it is not another<br \/>\nillness such as pneumonia, strep throat, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Prevention:<\/p>\n<p>To lower your risk of getting the flu, or any other virus, you<br \/>\nshould:<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Avoid people who are ill<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Cover your mouth with a tissue when coughing, then properly<br \/>\ndispose of the tissue in a trash receptacle<\/p>\n<p>\u00b7 Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth<\/p>\n<p>What You Can Do:<\/p>\n<p>For now, stay healthy and stay informed. It is always a good idea to<br \/>\npractice good health habits, eat a balanced diet, exercise on a<br \/>\nregular basis, get plenty of rest and practice good hygiene.<\/p>\n<p>Web sites for organizations such as the World Health Organization,<br \/>\nthe American Red Cross and the Centers for Disease Control and<br \/>\nPrevention contain a wealth of information regarding the flu\u2019s<br \/>\nsymptoms, treatment and prevention. I urge you to take time to educate<br \/>\nyourself and your family about flu and precautions you can take. Avoid<br \/>\nspeculation and be sure of the facts.
