The<br \/>\nAcademic Counselor assists students who have identified themselves as<br \/>\ndisabled to receive reasonable accommodations in accordance with<br \/>\nFederal laws. An important goal of the Office of Student Disability<br \/>\nServices is to increase the retention of students with disabilities<br \/>\nand to foster a supportive institutional climate. The overall<br \/>\nresponsibilities of the Academic Counselor focus on facilitating the<br \/>\ndelivery of effective services to eligible students. (2) Serve as secondary academic<br \/>\nadvisor to students with disabilities. (3) Advise students concerning<br \/>\ncoursework and degree plans. (4) Assist students in the development of<br \/>\neducational plans. (5) Monitor academic performance of students with<br \/>\ndisabilities on scholastic probation or continued scholastic<br \/>\nprobation. (6)Continuously document and monitor academic progress of<br \/>\nstudents receiving services through SDS. (7) Prepare Letters of<br \/>\nAccommodation for University and high school students.<\/p>\n<p>(8) Maintain regular contact (phone, letters, email, SDS BlackBoard)<br \/>\nwith students being served throughout the school year to ensure<br \/>\ncompliance with prescribed accommodations. (9) Coordinate and<br \/>\nsupervise accommodated testing. (10) Present workshops to University<br \/>\nand high schools faculty. (11) Update SDS website as required. (12)<br \/>\nAssist with the creation and dissemination of all internal and<br \/>\nexternal information in various media about Student Disability<br \/>\nServices. (13) Prepare and maintain SDS student files in accordance<br \/>\nestablished guidelines. (14) Contact publishing houses to acquire<br \/>\nelectronic versions of student&#8217;s textbooks and create audio versions<br \/>\nof textbooks in-house as needed. (15)Assist students in acquiring<br \/>\nnecessary assistive technology and disability related resources. (16)<br \/>\nPrepare reports as required. (17) Assist students with outside,<br \/>\ndisability-related resources\/services. (18) Serve as academic advisor<br \/>\nat University Advising Center during periods of high activity.<\/p>\n<p>(19) Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.<\/p>\n<p>Required Education \tBachelor of Arts in social science or education<\/p>\n<p>Required Experience \tWorking knowledge the Americans with<br \/>\nDisabilities Act of 1974 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of<br \/>\n1973, as it applies to institutions of higher education. Minimum three<br \/>\nyears experience in higher education and\/or academic advising,<br \/>\ncounseling, serving students with disabilities and\/or special needs.<br \/>\nExperience in conflict resolution and crisis intervention. Adept at<br \/>\nhandling multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.<\/p>\n<p>Required Certificates, Licenses, or Registrations \tNone<\/p>\n<p>Preferred Qualifications \tMaster&#8217;s Degree in education, guidance and<br \/>\ncounseling or social work is preferred. <\/p>\n<p>Special Instructions to Applicants \t <\/p>\n<p>Department \tStudent Disability Services <\/p>\n<p>Job Category \tAdministrator <\/p>\n<p>Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: \tUnderstanding of the higher<br \/>\neducation experience as it applies to students with disabilities<br \/>\nand\/or special needs.
