Position Title – Counselor-Student Disability Services<\/p>\n
Position Summary \tThe Academic Counselor assists the Director of
\nStudent Disability Services in the administration of the American with
\nDisabilities Act of 1974 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
\n1973 by providing services to eligible students at the University,
\nIncarnate Word High School and St. Anthony Catholic High School. The
\nAcademic Counselor assists students who have identified themselves as
\ndisabled to receive reasonable accommodations in accordance with
\nFederal laws. An important goal of the Office of Student Disability
\nServices is to increase the retention of students with disabilities
\nand to foster a supportive institutional climate. The overall
\nresponsibilities of the Academic Counselor focus on facilitating the
\ndelivery of effective services to eligible students. The Academic
\nCounselor also provides advising support services to the University
\nAdvising Center, when required. <\/p>\n

Essential Duties and Responsibilities \t(1) Coordinate daily office
\noperations and delivery of services. (2) Serve as secondary academic
\nadvisor to students with disabilities. (3) Advise students concerning
\ncoursework and degree plans. (4) Assist students in the development of
\neducational plans. (5) Monitor academic performance of students with
\ndisabilities on scholastic probation or continued scholastic
\nprobation. (6)Continuously document and monitor academic progress of
\nstudents receiving services through SDS. (7) Prepare Letters of
\nAccommodation for University and high school students.<\/p>\n
(8) Maintain regular contact (phone, letters, email, SDS BlackBoard)
\nwith students being served throughout the school year to ensure
\ncompliance with prescribed accommodations. (9) Coordinate and
\nsupervise accommodated testing. (10) Present workshops to University
\nand high schools faculty. (11) Update SDS website as required. (12)
\nAssist with the creation and dissemination of all internal and
\nexternal information in various media about Student Disability
\nServices. (13) Prepare and maintain SDS student files in accordance
\nestablished guidelines. (14) Contact publishing houses to acquire
\nelectronic versions of student’s textbooks and create audio versions
\nof textbooks in-house as needed. (15)Assist students in acquiring
\nnecessary assistive technology and disability related resources. (16)
\nPrepare reports as required. (17) Assist students with outside,
\ndisability-related resources\/services. (18) Serve as academic advisor
\nat University Advising Center during periods of high activity.<\/p>\n
(19) Perform other duties as assigned by the Director.<\/p>\n
Required Education \tBachelor of Arts in social science or education<\/p>\n
Required Experience \tWorking knowledge the Americans with
\nDisabilities Act of 1974 and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of
\n1973, as it applies to institutions of higher education. Minimum three
\nyears experience in higher education and\/or academic advising,
\ncounseling, serving students with disabilities and\/or special needs.
\nExperience in conflict resolution and crisis intervention. Adept at
\nhandling multiple priorities and meeting deadlines.<\/p>\n

Preferred Qualifications \tMaster’s Degree in education, guidance and
\ncounseling or social work is preferred. <\/p>\n

\nExcellent interpersonal and leadership skills. Ability to work with
\nprofessionalism and confidentiality. Knowledge of data base management
\nsystems: Microsoft Office, Windows XP, Excel, Word, Filemaker,
\nXtender, etc. Experience with Banner System highly desirable. <\/p>\n
