2009 COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY AT TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF<\/p>\n
Austin, Texas \u2013 June 4, 2009 At 7:00 p.m. today, students of Texas
\nSchool for the Deaf\u2019s (TSD) Class of 2009 receive their diplomas and
\ncelebrate their achievements among friends and family during
\ncommencement ceremonies in the R. L. Davis Auditorium at 1102 South
\nCongress Avenue, before embarking on the next leg of their life\u2019s
\njourney.<\/p>\n
TSD\u2019s 2009 Valedictorian, Krystal Johnson, from North Richland
\nHills, and Salutatorian, Michelle Giterman, of Austin, are among the
\n51 graduating seniors. Several graduates have already received letters
\nof acceptance from colleges and universities outside of Texas while
\nmany will attend in-state community colleges and universities, or seek
\ntechnical training degrees. Others receiving certificates of
\ncompletion will remain at TSD to focus on independent living and
\nspecialized job skills in the Post-Secondary Transitional Program.<\/p>\n
To give the commencement address this evening, TSD welcomes Mr. Mark
\nJ. Myers MA, Provost at Southwest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf
\n(SWCID) in Big Spring. Claire Bugen, TSD\u2019s Superintendent says,
\n\u201cMr. Myers plans to inspire our students about the many
\npost-secondary options that are available to them, and what it takes
\nto be successful beyond graduation.\u201d Myers, who became profoundly
\ndeaf due to spinal meningitis at the age of 11 months, is a graduate
\nof St. Mary’s School for the Deaf in Buffalo NY. He holds a Bachelor
\nof Arts in Psychology from Gallaudet University, a Master of Arts in
\nDeafness Rehabilitation from New York University, and is currently in
\na doctoral program at the University of Connecticut. Prior to joining
\nSWCID, Myers 18+ years of management and supervisory experience
\nworking with community-technical colleges, as well as private
\nnon-profit and governmental agencies in the field of higher education,
\nand rehabilitation and in community-based services to persons who are
\ndeaf and hard of hearing makes him, Bugen adds, \u201ca perfect role
\nmodel to motivate these students to reach beyond their wildest
\ndreams.\u201d<\/p>\n
With a strong belief in culture and community at TSD, students form a
\nunique identity based on their individual strengths and talents,
\nrather than their disabilities. TSD is an environment where students
