Conference explores issues for deaf<\/p>\n

The lobby was silent, yet dozens of conversations were going on.
\nHands moved about enthusiastically as members of the Texas Association
\nof the Deaf caught up with old friends and introduced themselves to
\nother members.<\/p>\n

The 45th biennial TAD conference was held at El Tropicano Hotel this
\nweekend. The conference hasn’t been held in San Antonio for 30 years.
\nThis year’s focus was on parental rights, deaf culture, children of
\ndeaf adults, cochlear implant users and the future of the deaf
\ncommunity.<\/p>\n

Compared to past conferences, this year’s event is more technical and
\nartistic, said Dr. Steve Baldwin, who serves as TAD president, in an
\ne-mail.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor the future, I hope TAD conferences will continue to unite the
\nTexas deaf community and strengthen the next generation of state
\nleaders,\u201d Baldwin said.<\/p>\n

The conference began on Thursday with a world film premiere of
\n\u201cJourney Through Deaf Texas\u201d and concluded with a family night on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n

Karen Kirby, TAD conference chair, said about 150 people registered
\nfor the three-day conference. She said she was thrilled with the
\nnumber of registrants, especially since her goal was 115.<\/p>\n

This year was Susan Eades’ first TAD conference. When she heard it
\nwas going to be in San Antonio, she immediately signed on to be a
\nvolunteer.<\/p>\n

Eades, a teacher for the deaf at Oak Meadow Elementary School who is
\nalso hearing impaired, was especially interested in the cochlear
\nimplant panel held on Friday.<\/p>\n

Each of the panel’s five participants has some version of a cochlear
\nimplant. The moderator asked the panel questions about their
\nexperiences with the implant. Most responses were positive, with the
\nmain complaint concerning how long the device’s battery lasts.<\/p>\n

Eades said their answers were interesting, but she still isn’t
\ninterested in an implant.<\/p>\n

\u201cI’m an excellent candidate for the implants, but I’m happy how I
\nam,\u201d Eades said. \u201cI’m not ready right now, but maybe one day.\u201d<\/p>\n
