{"id":6730,"date":"2009-06-16T00:23:17","date_gmt":"2009-06-16T05:23:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=6730"},"modified":"2009-06-16T02:50:12","modified_gmt":"2009-06-16T07:50:12","slug":"legislative-session-a-boost-to-howard-college","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/06\/16\/legislative-session-a-boost-to-howard-college\/","title":{"rendered":"Legislative session a boost to Howard College"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Legislative session a boost to HC <\/p>\n<p>Tuesday, 09 June 2009<\/p>\n<p>By STEVE REAGAN <\/p>\n<p>Staff Writer<\/p>\n<p>The recent session of the Texas Legislature was a successful one, as<br \/>\nfar as Howard College officials are concerned.<\/p>\n<p>HC President Dr. Cheryl Sparks said the recently concluded session<br \/>\nwas economically beneficial to her institution.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had a very successful session,\u201d Sparks said. \u201cHoward<br \/>\nCollege actually &#8230; will see an increase in its appropriation from<br \/>\nthe state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Legislators decided to include Howard in the Small School Allotment,<br \/>\nwhich funnels funds toward qualifying smaller community colleges and<br \/>\nuniversities. With that decision, HC will receive a little more than<br \/>\n$1 million extra over the course of the next two years, Sparks said.<\/p>\n<p>College officials have not yet decided how to spend the windfall, she<br \/>\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf also benefited from the<br \/>\nrecent legislative session.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSWCID will receive an additional $732,000 the next two years,\u201d<br \/>\nSparks said. \u201cThat extra money will allow us to expand our online<br \/>\nand distance learning programs. Some of the money will also go to the<br \/>\ncareer center and to enhance our communication system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The session also continued funding for community college insurance<br \/>\nbenefits. Texas Gov.
