Legislative session a boost to HC <\/p>\n

The recent session of the Texas Legislature was a successful one, as
\nfar as Howard College officials are concerned.<\/p>\n

HC President Dr. Cheryl Sparks said the recently concluded session
\nwas economically beneficial to her institution.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe had a very successful session,\u201d Sparks said. \u201cHoward
\nCollege actually … will see an increase in its appropriation from
\nthe state.\u201d<\/p>\n

Legislators decided to include Howard in the Small School Allotment,
\nwhich funnels funds toward qualifying smaller community colleges and
\nuniversities. With that decision, HC will receive a little more than
\n$1 million extra over the course of the next two years, Sparks said.<\/p>\n

College officials have not yet decided how to spend the windfall, she
\nadded.<\/p>\n

SouthWest Collegiate Institute for the Deaf also benefited from the
\nrecent legislative session.<\/p>\n

\u201cSWCID will receive an additional $732,000 the next two years,\u201d
\nSparks said. \u201cThat extra money will allow us to expand our online
\nand distance learning programs. Some of the money will also go to the
\ncareer center and to enhance our communication system.\u201d<\/p>\n

The session also continued funding for community college insurance
\nbenefits. Texas Gov. Rick Perry vetoed those payments two years ago,
\nalthough they were eventually restored by the Legislative Budget
\nBoard.<\/p>\n

Another area of encouragement from state officials was a growing
\nsupport for increased vocational training.<\/p>\n

Sparks said Howard College will be eligible for grants through Jobs
\nand Education for Texas, which provides money for community colleges
\nto establish or enhance their vocation training programs.<\/p>\n

Sparks said this was an area local officials were examining very
\nclosely.<\/p>\n
