{"id":6777,"date":"2009-06-18T08:22:55","date_gmt":"2009-06-18T13:22:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=6777"},"modified":"2009-06-18T10:51:45","modified_gmt":"2009-06-18T15:51:45","slug":"nad-shares-news-from-the-fcc-deadline-extended","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/06\/18\/nad-shares-news-from-the-fcc-deadline-extended\/","title":{"rendered":"NAD Shares News from the FCC-Deadline Extended"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NAD Shares News from the FCC <\/p>\n<p>FCC Extends Deadline to November 12, 2009 for 10-digit local phone<br \/>\nnumbers for VPs, VRS and IP Relay users <\/p>\n<p>People who use video relay service (VRS) or Internet Protocol relay<br \/>\n(IP Relay) must have real 10-digit local phone numbers \u2013 by November<br \/>\n12, 2009 \u2013 to make non-emergency calls.<\/p>\n<p>The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) extended the deadline<br \/>\n(previously set for June 30, 2009) to give people more time to get<br \/>\ntheir 10-digit local phone numbers.<\/p>\n<p>Fake or \u201cproxy\u201d videophone (VP) numbers cannot be used after<br \/>\nNovember 12, 2009.<\/p>\n<p>VRS and IP Relay calls will not be connected without a real 10-digit<br \/>\nlocal number after November 12, 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Emergency 911 calls \u2013 without a 10-digit number \u2013 cannot be<br \/>\nconnected automatically (but will be connected as quickly as possible)<br \/>\nto the nearest 911 emergency service center.<\/p>\n<p>Benefits of 10-digit local phone numbers:<\/p>\n<p>* Your 911 emergency call can be sent automatically to the 911<br \/>\nemergency center that serves the location associated with your<br \/>\n10-digit number;<\/p>\n<p>* Telephone users can dial your 10-digit number and be connected<br \/>\nautomatically to you through your VRS or IP Relay provider; and<\/p>\n<p>* You can connect with other VRS or IP Relay users by dialing a<br \/>\n10-digit number.<\/p>\n<p>The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) urges all VP, VRS, and IP<br \/>\nRelay users to contact a VRS or IP Relay provider to get your 10-digit<br \/>\nlocal phone number today.<\/p>\n<p>For more information, please see the FCC factsheets and American Sign<br \/>\nLanguage (ASL) videos available at<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.fcc.gov\/cgb\/dro\/trs.html.<\/p>\n<p>About the NAD<\/p>\n<p>The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) was established in 1880 by<br \/>\ndeaf leaders who believed in the right of the American deaf community<br \/>\nto use sign language, to congregate on issues important to them, and<br \/>\nto have its interests represented at the national level.
