\nTEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF SUPERINTENDENT APPOINTED TO GALLAUDET
\nUNIVERSITY\u2019S BOARD OF TRUSTEES<\/p>\n

Austin, Texas – September 28, 2009 Gallaudet University announced today a
\nTexas leader among new appointees chosen to join the University\u2019s board of
\ntrustees.<\/p>\n

Claire Bugen, superintendent and chief executive officer of the Texas School
\nfor the Deaf (TSD) will serve a three-year term as trustee on Gallaudet
\nUniversity\u2019s board, which holds policy-making authority, management of and
\nfunding responsibility for the University. Gallaudet University – located in
\nWashington D.C. – is the world leader in liberal education and career
\ndevelopment for deaf and hard of hearing undergraduate students.<\/p>\n

Bugen, who has lead TSD since 1998 and began her tenure at the school as a
\nprincipal in 1976, has more than 30 years in credentials serving in
\nadministrative roles for schools and programs for deaf students. Active in
\nprofessional organizations her entire career, Bugen served as president and
\nsecretary of the Convention of American Instructors of the Deaf (CAID) and
\nthe Conference of Educational Administrators of Schools and Programs for the
\nDeaf (CEASD). Bugen presently chairs CEASD\u2019s Accreditation of Schools
\nCommittee and serves as a member of CEASD\u2019s Government Relations Committee.
\nBugen was instrumental in the development of the National Agenda for the
\nEducation of Deaf Students – a coalition of parent, consumer, professional,
\nand advocacy organizations working to develop an effective,
\ncommunication-driven educational delivery system for deaf students. Her
\nrecent awards include Outstanding Women in Texas Government and the Robert
\nR. Davila award for meritorious contributions to the field of deafness,
\npresented by CEASD.<\/p>\n

In response to today\u2019s announcement, former TSD Valedictorian Christopher
\nKearney (\u201907) who is now attending Gallaudet University wrote to Mrs. Bugen,
\n\u201c\u2026I am sending you my heartfelt congratulations! Thank you for all that you
\ndo because your endeavors help to push the bar higher for all of us!\u201d<\/p>\n

The Texas School for the Deaf is the oldest continuously operating public
