{"id":8047,"date":"2009-10-09T16:12:10","date_gmt":"2009-10-09T21:12:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=8047"},"modified":"2009-10-12T16:08:08","modified_gmt":"2009-10-12T21:08:08","slug":"national-math-contest-for-middle-school-students-with-hearing-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/10\/09\/national-math-contest-for-middle-school-students-with-hearing-loss\/","title":{"rendered":"National Math Contest for Middle School Students with Hearing Loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For Immediate Release<br \/>\nContact: Greg.Livadas@rit.edu<br \/>\n(585) 475-6217 V\/TTY<\/p>\n<p><strong>National Math Contest for Middle School Students with Hearing Loss <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Deaf or hard-of-hearing middle school students from across the country can<br \/>\nparticipate  in Rochester Institute of Technology\u2019s fourth annual Math<br \/>\nCompetition for Students with Hearing Loss on April 9 \u2013 11, 2010 at RIT\u2019s<br \/>\nNational Technical Institute for the Deaf.<\/p>\n<p>This competition, for students in grades 6 to 8 who are deaf or hard of<br \/>\nhearing, is designed to promote math as fun and engaging and features three<br \/>\nrounds that test speed and accuracy, teamwork and additional math skills.<br \/>\nThe competition features questions from MATHCOUNTS\u00ae,  a national enrichment,<br \/>\ncoaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics<br \/>\nachievement throughout the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>More  than  90 students from across the U.S. participated in a team or<br \/>\nindividually in the 2009 event. The first place individual winner was Ted<br \/>\nZoerner, from Vernado Middle School in Irvine, Calif.; the top team winners<br \/>\nwere from the Austin School for the Deaf in Texas. Cash prizes are awarded<br \/>\nto the top three places in both the individual and team competitions.<\/p>\n<p>This year, the competition will be limited to the first 20 schools that<br \/>\nsubmit completed registration forms and payment. Registration begins online<br \/>\non Oct. 23, 2009. Registration will be closed on Jan. 15, 2010 or when the<br \/>\n20 school limit is reached.<\/p>\n<p>Coaches and students wishing to participate in the next competition can get<br \/>\nmore information at <a href=\"www.rit.edu\/NTID\/MathCompetition\" target=\"_blank\">www.rit.edu\/NTID\/MathCompetition<\/a>. Registration is $80<br \/>\nregistration per team (four students) or $20 for students who register<br \/>\nindividually. Parents and teachers are encouraged to accompany the students<br \/>\nduring the weekend, which offers fun and social activities when not focusing<br \/>\non the math competition.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.rit.edu\/NTID\/MathCompetition\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.rit.edu\/NTID\/MathCompetition<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The MATHCOUNTS\u00ae Foundation attempts to increase enthusiasm for and enhance<br \/>\nachievement in middle school mathematics throughout the U.S. Each year,<br \/>\nteachers use problems in the annual MATHCOUNTS\u00ae School Handbook with more<br \/>\nthan 500,000 students. The MATHCOUNTS\u00ae materials and competition series<br \/>\nchallenge students&#8217; math skills, develop their self-confidence and reward<br \/>\nthem for their achievements.<\/p>\n<p>RIT is internationally recognized as a leader for providing computing,<br \/>\nengineering, imaging technology and fine and applied arts programs, and for<br \/>\nproviding unparalleled support services for students with hearing loss.
