National Math Contest for Middle School Students with Hearing Loss <\/strong><\/p>\n

Deaf or hard-of-hearing middle school students from across the country can
\nparticipate in Rochester Institute of Technology\u2019s fourth annual Math
\nCompetition for Students with Hearing Loss on April 9 \u2013 11, 2010 at RIT\u2019s
\nNational Technical Institute for the Deaf.<\/p>\n

This competition, for students in grades 6 to 8 who are deaf or hard of
\nhearing, is designed to promote math as fun and engaging and features three
\nrounds that test speed and accuracy, teamwork and additional math skills.
\nThe competition features questions from MATHCOUNTS\u00ae, a national enrichment,
\ncoaching and competition program that promotes middle school mathematics
\nachievement throughout the U.S.<\/p>\n

More than 90 students from across the U.S. participated in a team or
\nindividually in the 2009 event. The first place individual winner was Ted
\nZoerner, from Vernado Middle School in Irvine, Calif.; the top team winners
\nwere from the Austin School for the Deaf in Texas. Cash prizes are awarded
\nto the top three places in both the individual and team competitions.<\/p>\n

This year, the competition will be limited to the first 20 schools that
\nsubmit completed registration forms and payment. Registration begins online
\non Oct. 23, 2009. Registration will be closed on Jan. 15, 2010 or when the
\n20 school limit is reached.<\/p>\n

Coaches and students wishing to participate in the next competition can get
\nmore information at www.rit.edu\/NTID\/MathCompetition<\/a>. Registration is $80
\nregistration per team (four students) or $20 for students who register
\nindividually. Parents and teachers are encouraged to accompany the students
\nduring the weekend, which offers fun and social activities when not focusing
\non the math competition.<\/p>\n

The MATHCOUNTS\u00ae Foundation attempts to increase enthusiasm for and enhance
\nachievement in middle school mathematics throughout the U.S. Each year,
\nteachers use problems in the annual MATHCOUNTS\u00ae School Handbook with more
\nthan 500,000 students. The MATHCOUNTS\u00ae materials and competition series
\nchallenge students’ math skills, develop their self-confidence and reward
\nthem for their achievements.<\/p>\n
