Alan Hurwitz on his selection as the<br \/>\ntenth  president  of  Gallaudet University.  Hurwitz is the first past<br \/>\npresident of the NAD to serve in this prestigious academic leadership role.<br \/>\nCurrently he serves as president of the National Technical Institute for the<br \/>\nDeaf  (NTID),  one of eight colleges within the Rochester Institute of<br \/>\nTechnology (RIT), and vice president and dean of RIT.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlan  Hurwitz  is a truly exceptional leader who will guide Gallaudet<br \/>\nUniversity into what I consider to be an exciting era for the American and<br \/>\nglobal deaf and hard of hearing community,\u201d said NAD President Bobbie Beth<br \/>\nScoggins.  \u201cWe at the NAD stand ready to be of support as he begins the<br \/>\nHerculean task of bringing together the diverse communities within and<br \/>\noutside of Gallaudet University and moving collectively forward in the<br \/>\npursuit of academic excellence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hurwitz has a solid civic and community leadership track record at the<br \/>\nnational and state levels.  Elected as 24th president of the NAD, he served<br \/>\na total of six years \u2013 two as president elect, two as president, and two as<br \/>\npast president. During his presidency (1982-84), the NAD had several notable<br \/>\nachievements.  These included formation of the Council of Organizational<br \/>\nRepresentatives, now known as the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Alliance, a<br \/>\ncoalition   of   national  professional  and  consumer  organizations;<br \/>\nimplementation of nationwide rally which influenced CBS to adopt closed<br \/>\ncaptioning  at a time when this was already implemented by other major<br \/>\nnetworks; creation of full time NAD Youth Relations (now Youth Leadership<br \/>\nPrograms) position, which continues to this day; establishment of national<br \/>\ndeaf awareness week in conjunction with World Federation of the Deaf, now<br \/>\nknown  as  International  Week of the Deaf; and selection of Yerker J.<br \/>\nAndersson  by  global general assembly delegates to the WFD presidency<br \/>\n(Andersson served two additional four year terms).  Hurwitz also served as<br \/>\npresident of the Empire State Association of the Deaf (1975-1979).<\/p>\n<p>Hurwitz,  who  will take office in January, succeeds Robert R.
