TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF HOSTS CONFERENCE AIMED TO ADVANCE SKILLS AND
\nDEVELOP new leaders among young deaf students<\/p>\n
STUDENTS FROM 30 SCHOOLS NATIONWIDE ATTEND 22ND JUNIOR NATIONAL ASSOCIATION
\nOF THE DEAF CONFERENCE<\/p>\n
Austin, Texas \u2013 November 4, 2009 Almost 200 participants, from 30 different
\nschools nationwide – including students, advisors, presenters and special
\nguests – arrive at the Texas School for the Deaf (TSD) today as the 22nd
\nbiennial Junior National Association of the Deaf (Junior NAD) conference
\nkicks off.<\/p>\n
With workshops, presentations and special projects scheduled through
\nSaturday, students will delve deep to understand the important impact deaf
\nleaders of the past have had on the deaf community today. One important
\nproject will demonstrate true global citizenship, with the group conspiring
\nto give back to the central Texas community by joining the Austin Empty Bowl
\nProject to end hunger, which benefits the Capital Area Food Bank.<\/p>\n
Representatives from participating schools compete Friday night in the
\nJunior NAD Pageant, when Mr. and Miss. Junior NAD 2009-2010 will be crowned.<\/p>\n
Other highlights include an Austin Scavenger Hunt for the group Thursday
\nevening, and a special banquet Saturday night at the Hyatt Regency Austin.<\/p>\n
Claira Oberrender, TSD Senior and current President of TSD\u2019s Junior NAD
\nchapter, opens the conference today at 3:00 pm along with Juan Munoz, TSD\u2019s
\nJunior NAD Vice President. \u201cStudents often feel they do not have a voice on
\ncurrent issues,\u201d Oberrender notes. \u201cBy being a part of Junior NAD,\u201d she
\nadds, \u201cwe are given opportunities that build our confidence and encourage us
\nto stand up and be heard on any important and controversial matters.\u201d<\/p>\n
Students will hear from various leaders from the deaf community throughout
\nthe conference, including Dr. Gertrude S. Galloway who has served as
\npresident of three different national deaf organizations, and Ms. Michelle
\nAnn Lapides, 2008-2010 Miss Deaf America.<\/p>\n

\nAssociation of the Deaf (NAD), the Junior NAD offers deaf and hard of
\nhearing students in 7th through 12th grades, many opportunities to develop
\nleadership skills, learn and demonstrate citizenship, and meet and interact
