\nSands of Time: NAD Presidents 1880-2003<\/p>\n
Silver Spring, MD — The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is pleased to announce its newest publication, “Sands of Time: NAD Presidents 1880-2003” by Lawrence R. Newman. This beautifully orchestrated narrative history of the life and times of the presidents of the NAD and the deaf and hard of hearing community made its debut at the recent 48th Biennial NAD Conference in Palm Desert, California.<\/p>\n
Written by past president Lawrence R. Newman, “Sands of Time” is a timeless story of the struggle to protect the civil rights of deaf people. This fascinating story, seen through the eyes of past NAD presidents, begins with the creation of the NAD in 1880 — a story of deaf people during a time when several forces came together to create an impetus for change. At a time when the American public used horses and carriages because there were no automobiles; steamships because there were no airplanes; and newspapers because there was no Internet; deaf people formed strong and long-lasting communities around deaf schools. They traveled long, slow distances to meet other deaf people. And the specialized newspapers of deaf people carried their message even further.<\/p>\n
It is commonly said that the NAD came into existence to fight for the rights of deaf teachers and deaf administrators, to fight for the proper education of deaf children, and to preserve sign language. But that does not tell the whole story. There were already organizations and publications promoting the rights of deaf people and defending their use of sign language.
