{"id":8433,"date":"2009-11-13T15:07:06","date_gmt":"2009-11-13T20:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=8433"},"modified":"2009-11-13T18:49:05","modified_gmt":"2009-11-13T23:49:05","slug":"film-showcase-offering-new-perspective","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/11\/13\/film-showcase-offering-new-perspective\/","title":{"rendered":"Film showcase offering new perspective"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Film showcase offering new perspective<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By Felicia Frazar<br \/>\nThe Gazette-Enterprise<\/p>\n<p>Published November 13, 2009<\/p>\n<p>SEGUIN \u2014 David Pierce is inviting all members of the community to take a<br \/>\n\u201cJourney Through Deaf Texas\u201d at the Cinema for Everyone Film Showcase.<\/p>\n<p>For the fifth year this mini film festival brings a new genre of movies to<br \/>\nthe Palace Theater said Pierce, CEO of Davideo Productions.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRegular movie theaters do not show enough films about deaf people and their<br \/>\nlives,\u201d he said. \u201cWe fill this need with our film showcases which draw<br \/>\nattendees from all over the state of Texas.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The featured films are enjoyment for everyone, not just a stereotype, Pierce<br \/>\nsaid who started the event in 2005.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a film showcase of independent films that are fully accessible to<br \/>\ndeaf, hard of hearing, and hearing people through the use of sign language<br \/>\nand open captions,\u201d said Pierce. \u201cPeople can get a good glimpse of the<br \/>\nsub-culture of deaf people and their lives through these films produced by<br \/>\nqualified filmmakers with firsthand knowledge of the deaf community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Pierce, former New York resident, was no stranger to the production world<br \/>\nwhen he relocated to Seguin in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>The cinematic event will be featuring five films from across the country,<br \/>\nPierce said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTwo of the films were produced in Indiana, one in Pennsylvania, one in New<br \/>\nYork and one in Texas,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJourney Through Deaf Texas\u201d is a documentary on the history of the Texas<br \/>\nAssociation  of  the  Deaf that was filmed and produced in Seguin. The<br \/>\nproduction covers the progress that the organization has made since it began<br \/>\nin the late 1800s, said Pierce who directed, edited and co-produced the film<br \/>\nalong  with  co-producer  and writer, Stephen C. Baldwin, PhD of Texas<br \/>\nAssociation of the Deaf.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2018Journey Through Deaf Texas\u2019 is locally produced and is about the history<br \/>\nof the Texas Association of the Deaf since its inception in 1886,\u201d Pierce<br \/>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>The  film  showcase begins on Friday at 8 p.m. with the \u201cLegend of the<br \/>\nMountain Man.\u201d Admission is $11.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHeart of the Hydrogen Jukebox\u201d will run Saturday, Nov. 14 at 12 p.m.,<br \/>\nadmission is $7.
