Influence<\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas Advanced Leadership and Advocacy Conference 2010<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>SUNDAY, MARCH 28 \u2013 TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 2010 | DOUBLETREE HOTEL AUSTIN<\/p>\n<p>About the Conference<\/p>\n<p>The Texas Advanced Leadership and Advocacy Conference (TALAC) is an annual<br \/>\nconference that aims to build capacity for advocacy and leadership in Texas<br \/>\nthrough  individuals  with  disabilities,  their  family  members  and<br \/>\nprofessionals in the disability field. TALAC strives to provide training<br \/>\nthat  enhances  the ability of these stakeholders to work together for<br \/>\nimproved outcomes. This conference is made possible by a grant awarded to<br \/>\nthe Center on Disability and Development at Texas A&amp;M University by the<br \/>\nTexas Council for Developmental Disabilities (funding: $150,000 \/75% TCDD<br \/>\nand $49,773\/25% match from Texas A&amp;M).<\/p>\n<p>Conference Goals<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Increase the number of competent leaders and advocates with disabilities<br \/>\nacross the state of Texas<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Equip current leaders and advocates with up-to-date knowledge and skills<br \/>\nin the areas of self-advocacy and public policy advocacy<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Provide opportunities to gain experiences for public policy influence<\/p>\n<p>\u2022 Build and expand a network of leaders in the disability community for<br \/>\nunited efforts in effective advocacy<\/p>\n<p>What to Expect | Conference participants can expect to leave with a renewed<br \/>\nidea of what is possible by identifying methods to successfully promote and<br \/>\nadvocate for policy and systems change. They will also be able to define<br \/>\ncurrent legislative issues and will gain knowledge in how to collaboratively<br \/>\nadvocate for change alongside local and statewide advocacy organizations.<\/p>\n<p>Participants<\/p>\n<p>TALAC will benefit individuals with disabilities, their family members and<br \/>\nprofessionals in the disability field. Others interested in disability<br \/>\nissues are also encouraged to attend. Participants must: 1) be at least 18<br \/>\nyears old, 2) live in Texas and 3) have experience or interest in public<br \/>\npolicy  advocacy  and in assuming a leadership role in local community<br \/>\nactivities. Applications will be available online in September 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Fees and Financial Support<\/p>\n<p>A $90 registration fee is the responsibility of the participant. If this fee<br \/>\nis  a  financial  burden,  a limited number of needs-based waivers are<br \/>\navailable. This fee is refundable if registration is canceled by Monday,<br \/>\nFeb. 15, 2010. Financial support is available for first-time applicants with<br \/>\na disability or a family member of a person with a disability (for example,<br \/>\nparent,  grandparent,  sibling  or  spouse\/domestic partner.) Eligible<br \/>\nparticipants will be provided two-nights\u2019 lodging at the conference hotel<br \/>\nand will be reimbursed for up to $200 in travel expenses (i.e., airfare or<br \/>\nmileage).
