{"id":8656,"date":"2009-12-09T03:42:05","date_gmt":"2009-12-09T08:42:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=8656"},"modified":"2009-12-09T04:16:02","modified_gmt":"2009-12-09T09:16:02","slug":"youre-invited-to-ncds-houston-quarterly-meeting","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/12\/09\/youre-invited-to-ncds-houston-quarterly-meeting\/","title":{"rendered":"You&#8217;re invited to NCD&#8217;s Houston Quarterly Meeting"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>December 8, 2009<\/p>\n<p>Dear Friends and Colleagues:<\/p>\n<p>On behalf of the National Council on Disability (NCD), it is my pleasure to<br \/>\ninvite you to attend NCD\u2019s next quarterly meeting, which will take place at<br \/>\nthe JW Marriott Houston, 5150 Westheimer, Houston, Texas, beginning at 8:3<br \/>\na.m. on Tuesday, January 19, 2010, and ending at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday,<br \/>\nJanuary 21, 2010.  This meeting is open to the public.<\/p>\n<p>NCD\u2019s purpose is to promote policies, programs, practices, and procedures<br \/>\nthat guarantee equal opportunity for all individuals with disabilities, and<br \/>\nthat empower individuals with disabilities to achieve economic<br \/>\nself-sufficiency, independent living, and inclusion and integration into all<br \/>\naspects of society.  To carry out this mandate we gather public and<br \/>\nstakeholder input, including that received at our public meetings held<br \/>\naround the country; review and evaluate federal programs and legislation;<br \/>\nand provide the President, Congress, and federal agencies with advice and<br \/>\nrecommendations.  NCD is an independent federal agency, composed of 15<br \/>\nmembers appointed by the President, by and with the consent of the U.S.<br \/>\nSenate.<\/p>\n<p>NCD believes it is vital to hear from communities around the country on what<br \/>\nworks and what does not for people with disabilities.  This meeting will<br \/>\nprovide another opportunity for that exchange.  The agenda will include,<br \/>\namong other things, presentations by the Honorable Kathleen Martinez,<br \/>\nAssistant Secretary of Labor for Disability Employment Policy and Lex<br \/>\nFrieden, Professor of Health Informatics and Professor of Rehabilitation,<br \/>\nUniversity of Texas at Houston; presentations on emergency preparedness and<br \/>\nyouth with disabilities in transition; and two releases of NCD research<br \/>\nprojects: Workforce Infrastructure in Support of People with Disabilities<br \/>\nand The State of Housing in America in the 21st Century: A Disability<br \/>\nPerspective.<\/p>\n<p>Specific times are also designated to receive public comment, supported by a<br \/>\ntoll-free call-in line, and input is encouraged and greatly appreciated.<br \/>\nIndividuals or organizations can also provide written comments by e-mail,<br \/>\nfax, or mail.  A public comment session will be held Wednesday, January 20,<br \/>\nfrom 11:30 a.m. until Noon, CST.  The toll-free call-in number is (888)<br \/>\n790-6568, and the pass code is \u201cNCD Meeting.\u201d  Written comments on<br \/>\ndisability-related issues of concern or interest can also be emailed to<br \/>\nmquigley@ncd.gov at any time.<\/p>\n<p>You are also invited to join us for a reception at the hotel for meeting<br \/>\nparticipants, audience members, and stakeholders from the disability<br \/>\ncommunity on Wednesday, January 20 from noon until 1:30 p.m.  Additional<br \/>\ndetails about the meeting will be posted on the NCD Web site at<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ncd.gov\" target=\"_blank\">http:\/\/www.ncd.gov<\/a> as soon as they become available.
