Greetings!<\/p>\n

I want to take this opportunity to extend warm wishes to you and your loved
\nones for this year\u2019s holiday season and New Year, on behalf of the National
\nAssociation of the Deaf (NAD) Board of Directors and staff.<\/p>\n

This past year has been one of ups and downs. Ups in the way of
\naccomplishments. Downs in the way of economic difficulties. We opened the
\nyear with a staff furlough and with your support were able to reinstate
\nsalaries to normal levels. As this year draws to a close, we have had to put
\nanother furlough into effect. The beating heart of the American deaf
\ncommunity is in dire straits, yet our resolute and dedicated staff continues
\nto advocate for our civil rights and fiercely pursue our mission.<\/p>\n

During this past year, the NAD has…<\/p>\n

* Advocated against closures or budget cuts for schools for the deaf and
\nfor appropriate measures to ensure that each child\u2019s Individualized
\nEducation Program and placement is appropriate.
\n* Met with Obama administration staff and key policymakers on civil
\nrights, employment, education, health care, telecommunications and
\ntechnology.
\n* Fought for improved VRS interoperability, integrity and quality, with
\nreal 10-digit telephone numbers and E911 access.
\n* Moved forward on accessible broadband services and Internet media
\nadvocacy efforts with Marlee Matlin as our celebrity spokesperson.
\n* Gathered support for the 21st Century Communications and Video
\nAccessibility Act (H.R. 3101, with companion Senate bill expected to be
\nintroduced in 2010).
\n* Filed complaints in federal courts on relay services access to banks,
\ninterpreting services in health care and judicial systems, and captioning
\naccess in stadiums.
\n* Promoted youth scholarship, citizenship and leadership skills
\ndevelopment through conferences, ambassadorship travels, school and
\ncommunity activities and camp experiences.
\n* Launched a new website that is easy to navigate, with tie-in to
\nTwitter and other social networking feeds.
\n* Began formation of a media studio to generate v\/blogs with emphasis on
\nyouth and diversity.<\/p>\n

Much has been accomplished to date. Our gratitude goes to members, donors
\nand volunteers who have supported the board and staff in carrying out the
\nabove and many more. While significant gains have been made, the NAD can do
\nonly so much within its limited means.<\/p>\n

Invest in the future of our community<\/p>\n

Looking ahead to 2010, we face weighty challenges. The economic difficulties
\nwe are all experiencing have hit us hard \u2013 with zero operating reserves due
\nto dwindling support, we have had to borrow funds, trim expenses to the
\nbone, and we just recently cut staff time and salaries by 20 percent between
\nJanuary and March \u2013 all to ensure that your civil rights are not
\ncompromised. We hope this is a temporary situation and that level of
\nprotection that you deserve is not diminished.<\/p>\n

How can you help? By being a member. By donating. These are the two ways you
\ncan help the NAD carry out its mission to preserve, protect and promote the
\ncivil, human and linguistic rights of deaf and hard of hearing people in the
\nUSA.<\/p>\n

Please join, if you are not already a member. If you aren\u2019t sure, contact
\nus. Help also by making a donation to take advantage of year-end tax
\nsavings, no matter how small or large.<\/p>\n

With your support, the NAD can make great things happen in the New Year!<\/p>\n
