{"id":8814,"date":"2009-12-29T22:22:05","date_gmt":"2009-12-30T03:22:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=8814"},"modified":"2009-12-30T00:16:06","modified_gmt":"2009-12-30T05:16:06","slug":"call-for-workshop-and-commission-presentations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2009\/12\/29\/call-for-workshop-and-commission-presentations\/","title":{"rendered":"Call for Workshop and Commission Presentations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Call for Workshop and Commission Presentations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) is seeking proposals for<br \/>\nexciting, informative and forward-looking education, training and public<br \/>\npolicy presentations at the 50th Biennial NAD Conference to be held at the<br \/>\nPhiladelphia Marriott-Downtown hotel, July 6-10, 2010 in Philadelphia, PA.<br \/>\nThe conference theme is \u201cCelebrate Our Heritage. Invest in Our Future.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Conference Attendees<\/strong><br \/>\nBiennial national conference attendees consist of deaf, hard of hearing,<br \/>\nlate deafened, deaf blind and hearing participants who are diverse and from<br \/>\nall walks of life, of all ages and backgrounds, from across the nation.<br \/>\nThese will include federal, state and local government employees and<br \/>\nemployers, private sector and community leaders and service providers,<br \/>\neducators, parents, professionals, college students, senior citizens as well<br \/>\nas youth who are already exercising their leadership potential or want to<br \/>\nexpand on such.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Workshop and Commission Tracks<\/strong><br \/>\nTraditionally, biennial national conferences have welcomed education and<br \/>\ntraining workshops on a variety of topics, with tracks that are relevant and<br \/>\nappeal to all ages \u2013 ranging from youth to those who are young at heart.<br \/>\nThis general focus will continue, with the inclusion of skills development<br \/>\nand advancement strategies appropriate for the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, we will have issues-oriented commisssion tracks that are<br \/>\ngeared to national trends, challenges, opportunities and recommendations<br \/>\nthat can advance the public policy efforts of the NAD. Focus on<br \/>\nissues-oriented tracks are tied to the mission of the NAD which is to<br \/>\npreserve, protect and promote the civil, human and linguistic rights of deaf<br \/>\nand hard of hearing people in the USA. Workshop and commission presentations<br \/>\nshould also be tied to the principles of self-determination,<br \/>\nself-representation and self-expression which resulted in the establishment<br \/>\nof the NAD in 1880 and guides its work to this day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Workshop Tracks<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Grassroots Advocacy<br \/>\n\u2022 Economic Empowerment<br \/>\n\u2022 Technologies for Everyday Life<br \/>\n\u2022 Youth Leadership<br \/>\n\u2022 Additional Areas of Interest<\/p>\n<p><strong>Commission Tracks<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2022 Civil &amp; Employment Rights<br \/>\n\u2022 Educational Rights<br \/>\n\u2022 Health &amp; Human Rights<br \/>\n\u2022 Linguistic Rights<br \/>\n\u2022 Technological Rights<\/p>\n<p><strong>Screening and Selection Process<\/strong><br \/>\nWorkshop and commission proposals are selected on the basis of overall<br \/>\nquality and relevance in addition to the three C\u2019s (clarity, conciseness and<br \/>\ncompleteness) by conference screening committees knowledgeable in content<br \/>\nareas for all tracks. Proposals should offer content that is interesting to<br \/>\na variety of attendees and promotes audience participation (workshops) or<br \/>\nelevates awareness on advocacy issues of national importance (commissions).<br \/>\nPast evaluations show that attendees prefer presentations that are relevant,<br \/>\ninteractive and forward-looking.<\/p>\n<p>Proposals that are accepted for one-hour (60 minute) presentation slots will<br \/>\nbe scheduled with careful attention to conference program balance, starting<br \/>\nat 1:30 pm on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 and ending at 4:00 pm on Saturday,<br \/>\nJuly 10, 2010. Prospective presenters should be prepared to present during<br \/>\nthis timeframe, as assigned by the conference scheduling committee.<\/p>\n<p>Please understand that we cannot accept all proposals that are submitted.<br \/>\nProposals that are not clear, specific, or complete will not be considered.<br \/>\nPresentations that market specific products or services are not permitted;<br \/>\nthe Exhibit Hall is available for this purpose.<\/p>\n<p>All presentation proposals must by submitted online, using the required<br \/>\nform. Prospective presenters are encouraged to prepare their own MS Word<br \/>\nfiles and then copy\/paste content to the online form to prevent accidental<br \/>\nloss of information.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Presenter Requirements<\/strong><br \/>\nApproved presenters are required to bring their own PC-compatible USB flash<br \/>\ndrive containing MS Office content for visual presentation and they must be<br \/>\nprepared to describe presentation content fully to ensure accessibility.<br \/>\nVideos that are displayed during presentations must be open-captioned. CART<br \/>\nand interpreting services in addition to LCDs, PC laptops loaded with MS<br \/>\nOffice and projection screens will be provided for all workshops and<br \/>\ncommissions. Presentation handouts must be provided in hard copy as well as<br \/>\naccessible format; the NAD will provide guidance in this regard. Approved<br \/>\nprimary and co-presenters are required to pre-register (active NAD<br \/>\nmembership is encouraged) for the conference by May 15, 2010, and are<br \/>\nresponsible for their own travel and accommodations.
