{"id":8938,"date":"2010-01-12T20:52:05","date_gmt":"2010-01-13T01:52:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=8938"},"modified":"2010-01-12T21:55:40","modified_gmt":"2010-01-13T02:55:40","slug":"neighbors-deaf-man-saves-woman-from-burning-apartment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2010\/01\/12\/neighbors-deaf-man-saves-woman-from-burning-apartment\/","title":{"rendered":"Neighbors: Deaf man saves woman from burning apartment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Neighbors: Deaf man saves woman from burning apartment<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>by Kevin Peters, Ron Trevino \/ 11 News<br \/>\nPosted on January 11, 2010<\/p>\n<p>******<\/p>\n<p>PASADENA, Texas\u2014 A deaf neighbor saved a woman from a burning apartment at<br \/>\nabout 6:30 a.m. Monday in the 1100 block of Red Bluff.<\/p>\n<p>Residents of the complex said one of the buildings caught fire, and it<br \/>\nspread quickly.<\/p>\n<p>A woman was trying to escape her apartment when the flames blocked the<br \/>\nstairs and she became trapped on a second-story balcony.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s when neighbors said Darell McCollough, a deaf man who lives across<br \/>\nthe parking lot from the burning building, sprung into action.<\/p>\n<p>McCollough jumped in his white Jeep and drove it over to the flaming<br \/>\nstructure, stopping just under the balcony.<\/p>\n<p>He urged the woman, Lorenda Flanagan, to jump over the railing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He kept screaming at her, telling her to come over, come over the side. The<br \/>\nlady finally got up on the railing and actually jumped off onto his hood and<br \/>\nwhen she hit the hood she slipped and fell down to the concrete,&#8221; neighbor<br \/>\nStanley Dowlearn said.<\/p>\n<p>Flanagan was not hurt.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I\u2019ll thank him every day, every day I\u2019ll wake up I\u2019ll thank him,\u201c she said.<br \/>\n\u201cI\u2019ll pray for him every day I wake up.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Neighbors described McCollough as the kind of man who would give you the<br \/>\nshirt off his back and said he always has a Bible on the dash of his SUV.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He&#8217;s very religious, and he&#8217;ll help anybody he can,\u201d Mike Montgomery said.<br \/>\n\u201cHe&#8217;s a very good person.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There was no official word on the cause of this fire, but investigators<br \/>\nspeculated that it may have started on top of a stove kept on overnight by<br \/>\nsomeone trying to stay warm.<\/p>\n<p>Through an interpreter, McCollough told 11 News that he was just thankful<br \/>\nthat everyone was OK.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Thank Jesus for saving those people,&#8221; McCollough said in sign language.<br \/>\n&#8220;Thank you. Thank you.
