But for a Dallas teenager, it&#8217;s<br \/>\nsilent.<\/p>\n<p>When Frank Alvarado isn&#8217;t walking the hallways at Woodrow Wilson High<br \/>\nSchool,  there&#8217;s a good chance he&#8217;s walking the fairways. Frank is an avid<br \/>\ngolfer &#8212; who just happens to be deaf.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I grew up watching TV and wanted to learn how to play golf from watching<br \/>\nTV,&#8221; he said. &#8220;What I would do is go outside and practice golf, and<br \/>\neventually I&#8217;d like to learn to be skilled at golf.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There are more than 500 deaf and hard of hearing students in the Dallas ISD.<br \/>\nThose between age 16 and 18, like Frank, are able to take part in the Teen<br \/>\nEducation Support Services program.<\/p>\n<p>It was started five years ago for teenagers to improve their reading and<br \/>\nwriting, though tutoring, because of the high rate of high school dropouts.<\/p>\n<p>Participants are offered all sorts of activities, including golf.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Character development, self-esteem and self-confidence has improved, and<br \/>\nthat corrolates and translates over into the classroom,&#8221;  said Angela<br \/>\nJohnson Fisher, director of the Deaf Action Center.<\/p>\n<p>Frank spends a lof of time inside the classroom at the Deaf Action Center at<br \/>\nWoodrow Wilson High School.<\/p>\n<p>Laurie Vasallo is the deaf education counselor at Woodrow Wilson High and<br \/>\nsaid,<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our students learn about community resources and interaction with others in<br \/>\nthe community,&#8221; said Laurie Vasallo, the school&#8217;s deaf education counselor.<br \/>\n&#8220;It&#8217;s been a really wonderful, positive experience for them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>E-mail cflanagan@wfaa.com<\/p>\n<p>Source:<br \/>\nhttp:\/\/www.wfaa.com\/community\/After-The-Bell&#8212;Deaf-Action-Center-8195473<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After The Bell: Deaf Action Center by CHRIS FLANAGAN \/ WFAA-TV Posted on January 18, 2010 DALLAS \u2014 Golf is known as a &#8220;quiet&#8221; game.
