{"id":9090,"date":"2010-01-26T04:45:06","date_gmt":"2010-01-26T09:45:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=9090"},"modified":"2010-01-26T06:08:33","modified_gmt":"2010-01-26T11:08:33","slug":"state-to-howard-college-cut-5-percent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2010\/01\/26\/state-to-howard-college-cut-5-percent\/","title":{"rendered":"State to Howard College: Cut 5 percent"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>State to Howard College: Cut 5 percent<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By STEVE REAGAN<br \/>\nStaff Writer<\/p>\n<p>Some belt-tightening may be in Howard College\u2019s future.<\/p>\n<p>Howard, along with Texas\u2019 other community colleges, universities and<br \/>\nselected other agencies, is being asked by state officials to look for ways<br \/>\nto trim 5 percent of its expenses to help the state weather the economic<br \/>\ndownturn.<\/p>\n<p>The college received a letter, co-signed by Gov. Rick Perry, Lt. Gov. David<br \/>\nDewhurst and Speaker of the House Joe Straus, that definitely caught<br \/>\neveryone\u2019s attention.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been on notice since (autumn) that this could be possible &#8230; They<br \/>\nhave suggested that each agency institute a plan including a 5 percent<br \/>\nreduction in costs for the biennium by Feb. 15,\u201d HC President Dr. Cheryl<br \/>\nSparks said. \u201cThey want us to find \u2018prudent, efficient reductions that<br \/>\nminimize the impact on direct services.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In Howard\u2019s case, that means finding 5 percent to cut without adversely<br \/>\naffecting student instruction.<\/p>\n<p>No specific guidelines accompanied the correspondence, leaving Sparks and<br \/>\nothers unsure as to what steps need to be taken.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt this point, we\u2019re awaiting information from the Texas Association of<br \/>\nCommunity Colleges &#8230; that is expected to give us some direction on this<br \/>\nmatter,\u201d Sparks said. \u201cRight now, though, we really don\u2019t have that much<br \/>\ninformation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Losing 5 percent of the state\u2019s appropriation would result in an economic<br \/>\nhit of around $600,000 to Howard College and SouthWest Collegiate Institute<br \/>\nfor the Deaf, she estimated.<\/p>\n<p>Then again, any cut in revenue will hurt, Sparks added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe budget very conservatively and don\u2019t have a lot of waste &#8230; so there<br \/>\nwill be an impact,\u201d she said. \u201cBut building budgets is about making choices<br \/>\nand if it comes to that, we certainly will choose accordingly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sparks and the rest of the 50 Texas community college presidents will meet<br \/>\nwith TACC officials Wednesday in Austin.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re hopeful that at that time we will receive some more direction in this<br \/>\nmatter,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Contact Staff Writer Steve Reagan at 263-7331 ext. 234 or by e-mail at<br \/>\nreporter@bigspringherald.com<\/p>\n<p>Source:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bigspringherald.com\/content\/view\/202833\/60\/\" target=\"_blank\"> http:\/\/www.bigspringherald.com\/content\/view\/202833\/60\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>State to Howard College: Cut 5 percent By STEVE REAGAN Staff Writer Some belt-tightening may be in Howard College\u2019s future.
