{"id":9109,"date":"2010-01-26T23:07:12","date_gmt":"2010-01-27T04:07:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/?p=9109"},"modified":"2010-01-26T23:18:12","modified_gmt":"2010-01-27T04:18:12","slug":"buildings-named-after-husband-wife","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/deafnetwork.com\/wordpress\/blog\/2010\/01\/26\/buildings-named-after-husband-wife\/","title":{"rendered":"Buildings named after husband, wife"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Buildings named after husband, wife<br \/>\nJanuary 26, 2010<br \/>\nBurkes honored for role at SWCID<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By CINDY SMITH<br \/>\nSpecial to the Herald<\/p>\n<p>The Howard College board of trustees gave special recognition to Dr. Douglas<br \/>\nand Beatrice Burke by naming buildings on the SouthWest Collegiate Institute<br \/>\nfor the Deaf campus in their honor during their regularly scheduled meeting<br \/>\nMonday.<\/p>\n<p>The administration building, now called the Douglas Burke Education and<br \/>\nAdministration Building, was chosen to honor Dr. Burke for his pioneering<br \/>\nrole in the life of SWCID.<\/p>\n<p>As the first deaf individual to lead an institution of higher education in<br \/>\nthe nation, Burke paved the road for all deaf leaders and students.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dr. Burke was a true visionary as he worked with Howard College to<br \/>\nestablish SWCID and to lead its early development,&#8221; said Dr. Cheryl T.<br \/>\nSparks, Howard College president.  &#8220;When Dr. Burke passed away in 1988, we<br \/>\nlost a giant in the field of deaf education.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Burke&#8217;s early work in the establishment of a community college for the deaf<br \/>\nwas a milestone in the world of higher education as it created new<br \/>\nopportunities for the deaf not only in Texas but on the national and<br \/>\nworld-wide scene, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Sparks added, &#8220;He is certainly deserving of this special recognition and we<br \/>\nare proud to be able to remember him in this way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A second building naming took place as the residence hall \u2014 the Burke\/Mehan<br \/>\nResidence Hall \u2014 now serves as a special honor to Beatrice Burke.<\/p>\n<p>Although one of the wings of the residence hall previously recognized Dr.<br \/>\nBurke, it will now recognize his wife, Beatrice. Mrs. Burke played a<br \/>\nsignificant role as a deaf leader in the early envisioning of SWCID and has<br \/>\nprovided ongoing leadership in the advocacy of deaf education, Sparks said.<\/p>\n<p>Mrs. Burke also served as a SWCID faculty member and retired after 19 years<br \/>\nof service.
