Kids with cochlear implants more confident, finds study<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dallas, Texas, February 2 — The findings of a latest research prove that
\ndeaf kids with cochlear implants have as high a quality of life as kids who
\nhave normal hearing.<\/p>\n

Researchers from the Dallas Cochlear Implant program initiated this study to
\nanswer the queries of parents regarding the cochlear implant surgery and
\nhelp them in deciding about getting cochlear implants for their babies.<\/p>\n

Dr Betty A. Loy, lead author of the research informs, \u201cThey want to know:
\n\u2018Is my kid going to be made fun of? Is my kid going to be bullied? How is my
\nkid going to feel about themselves with this apparatus on their head?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cFor profoundly deaf children who regularly use a cochlear implant, feelings
\nabout life overall are no better or worse than their hearing peers. These
\nfindings indicate that cochlear implantation has a positive effect on
\ncertain psycho-social domains,\u201d she adds.<\/p>\n

What is a cochlear implant?
\nA cochlear implant is an electronic device that helps in reinstating partial
\nhearing in deaf people through the Otolaryngology surgery (head and neck
\nsurgery) that implants the device in the inner ear and is activated by
\nanother device worn outside the ear.<\/p>\n

This device detours the damaged parts of the aural system of the body and
\ndirectly stimulates the hearing nerve which enables the deaf to hear the
\nsounds.<\/p>\n

Study Details
\n84 deaf kids in the age bracket of 8 to 16 years, who had previously
\nundergone cochlear implants, took part in this study that examined the
\neffect of the implant on the life of these kids.<\/p>\n

The study participants were questioned on their feelings about themselves,
\ntheir family members, friends and school. Parents of these kids were also
\nasked similar questions and the results helped the researchers in arriving
\nat the conclusions of this research.<\/p>\n

The researchers also examined the responses of 1,501 normal kids in the same
\nage group, and the results were then compared.<\/p>\n

Results of the questionnaire showed that overall quality of life (QOL) was
\nsimilar in kids of both the groups, but the children with cochlear implants
\nwere found to have a notion that their QOL was lesser than their normal
\npeers.<\/p>\n

Deaf kids are pessimistic
\nPrevious research has revealed that hearing-impaired kids have more
\ndifficulty in making friends and feel less socially accepted than normal
\nchildren in the same age group.<\/p>\n

And the cochlear implants can help in boosting their confidence, as it
\nimproves verbal communication and language development in deaf people.<\/p>\n

The study and its findings have been published in the February issue of the
\njournal, Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery.<\/p>\n
