The program, which<br \/>\noperates through contracts with local\/regional service providers, offers<br \/>\nservices in each of the 11 Health and Human Services regions of the state.<br \/>\nThe DHHS Specialists team with DRS Counselors and other DARS agency staff to<br \/>\nensure quality services are available to the targeted population.<\/p>\n<p>Regionally-based specialists assist consumers in getting the services they<br \/>\nneed from state and local government, service organizations, employers and<br \/>\nprivate entities while advocating within the communities to remove<br \/>\ncommunication barriers to render more access to the targeted groups The<br \/>\nprogram also addresses attitudinal and cultural barriers affecting the<br \/>\npopulations which may hinder successful service delivery; provides<br \/>\ninformation and referral services; and may provide training geared toward<br \/>\nthe consumers acquiring a better understanding of the laws which support and<br \/>\nprotect them. Program services are available at no cost and include, but are<br \/>\nnot limited to training on: sensitivity, communication issues and technology<br \/>\nawareness.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Deafness Resource Specialists (DRS)<\/strong> have the knowledge-base and<br \/>\ncommunication ability to work with persons who are deaf, hard of hearing and<br \/>\nlate-deafened in the areas of advocacy, self-empowerment and sensitivity<br \/>\ntraining, as well as with Federal and State mandates on equal access to<br \/>\nservices, including education and employment. In many instances, Specialists<br \/>\nwork as liaisons between consumers and service providers on appropriate<br \/>\nservice provision.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hearing Loss Resource Specialists (HLRS)<\/strong> typically focus their services on<br \/>\nsensitivity training, communication strategies and assistive technology for<br \/>\nthe workplace, home and beyond for more independence and self-sufficiency.<br \/>\nSpecialists help locate resources when working with people who are hard of<br \/>\nhearing or who have an acquired loss of hearing.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the DARS\/DHHS Specialist Program in general:<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.dars.state.tx.us\/dhhs\/specialistpgm.shtml\" target=\"_blank\"> http:\/\/www.dars.state.tx.us\/dhhs\/specialistpgm.shtml<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DHHS is here is to Help You!
