DHHS Specialist Program<\/strong><\/p>\n

This DHHS program outreaches statewide to provide specialized services to
\nindividuals who are deaf or hard of hearing, as well as assisting agencies
\nand other service providers to serve these consumers. The program, which
\noperates through contracts with local\/regional service providers, offers
\nservices in each of the 11 Health and Human Services regions of the state.
\nThe DHHS Specialists team with DRS Counselors and other DARS agency staff to
\nensure quality services are available to the targeted population.<\/p>\n

Regionally-based specialists assist consumers in getting the services they
\nneed from state and local government, service organizations, employers and
\nprivate entities while advocating within the communities to remove
\ncommunication barriers to render more access to the targeted groups The
\nprogram also addresses attitudinal and cultural barriers affecting the
\npopulations which may hinder successful service delivery; provides
\ninformation and referral services; and may provide training geared toward
\nthe consumers acquiring a better understanding of the laws which support and
\nprotect them. Program services are available at no cost and include, but are
\nnot limited to training on: sensitivity, communication issues and technology
\nawareness.<\/p>\n

Deafness Resource Specialists (DRS)<\/strong> have the knowledge-base and
\ncommunication ability to work with persons who are deaf, hard of hearing and
\nlate-deafened in the areas of advocacy, self-empowerment and sensitivity
\ntraining, as well as with Federal and State mandates on equal access to
\nservices, including education and employment. In many instances, Specialists
\nwork as liaisons between consumers and service providers on appropriate
\nservice provision.<\/p>\n

Hearing Loss Resource Specialists (HLRS)<\/strong> typically focus their services on
\nsensitivity training, communication strategies and assistive technology for
\nthe workplace, home and beyond for more independence and self-sufficiency.
\nSpecialists help locate resources when working with people who are hard of
\nhearing or who have an acquired loss of hearing.<\/p>\n
