\nUnderstanding Deaf Culture: In search of Deafhood
\nWorkshop topics: What is Deafhood? What is \u201ccolonialism\u201d?
\nHow do these concepts apply to the Deaf world?
\nOffering a roadmap toward the vibrant, active & unified Deaf community.<\/p>\n

Ella Mae Lentz taught ASL and Deaf Culture for 16 years at Berkeley City
\nCollege.<\/p>\n

Ella grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1960\u2019s during the
\nbeginning of the Deaf Resurgence. She had her \u201cepiphany\u201d about ASL, enabling
\nher career of education & training.<\/p>\n

Upon retiring, Ella formed ASL Presents LLC, focusing on updating the
\nSigning Naturally curriculum series that she co-authored. She aims to
\npromote academic excellence in ASL and healthy Deafhood discourse among Deaf
\npeople as well as in the public.<\/p>\n

David \u201cDE\u201d Eberwein is the High School Instructional Principal at his high
\nschool alma mater, California School for the Deaf, Fremont. David has served
\non the Deaf Counseling, Advocacy and Referral Agency Board of Directors for
\nsix years, four of them as president.<\/p>\n

All his life, David has been actively involved in the Deaf community,
\nrecently helping establish the Deaf Bilingual Coalition and the Deafhood
\nFoundation.<\/p>\n

DE earned his degrees from Gallaudet University and San Francisco State.<\/p>\n

Dr. Genie Gertz is the Dean of Deaf Studies and Services at Ohlone College
\nin Fremont, CA. She received her B.A. & M.A. from Gallaudet University and
\nNew York University, respectively.<\/p>\n

Her current focus is exploring the social, cultural, linguistic and
\neducational features that cause to weaken Deaf individuals\u2019 development of
\nDeaf consciousness and identity.<\/p>\n

Dr. Gertz is a native of St. Petersburg, Russia. She comes to Ohlone from
\nCalifornia State University, Northridge; her doctorate in Cultural Studies
\nwas completed at UCLA in 2003.<\/p>\n
