Sign Language Interpreter for Voting – Lubbock

I am sending you an attachment (see below) regarding the availability of ASL (sign language) interpreters to assist voters who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Lubbock County is the only county to try the “Super-Precinct” arrangement of polling places for the November election. This has cut the number of polling places in half but allows a voter to vote in the polling place of their choice.

The committee working on this has placed as many of the polling places as possible on the Citibus route to allow access to voting for those who do not drive a vehicle. Additionally we have tried to increase access by having two polling places during early voting at locations familiar to and often visited by many people in the disability community. [One 2 hr. period at the Lubbock Community Center for the Deaf and one 2 hr. period at the LIFE/RUN Independent Living Center.] Arrangements have also been made to provide ASL interpreters at those same early voting times & places.

On election day there will be ASL interpreters available at two locations from 7am to 7pm. One of those locations is the Elections Office which is across the street from the main hub of Citibus near the courthouse. The other location will be the United Supermarket store which is across the street from the LIFE/RUN Independent Living Center.

It is important that this service be used by anyone needing it so that we can determine the effectiveness of our program for using it in this election. We are hoping that availability of ASL interpreters will become the norm for elections around the state and input in that regard from voters this November will assist us in evaluating how to best assist voters who prefer to communicate in American Sign Language.

I would appreciate it if you would spread this information out to your friends, family and clients in order that we may have a large turnout in the election of people representing interests of people with disabilities.
