Deaf Church Pastor Sam Carpenter to preach in ASL during special combined Deaf and hearing church service Sunday, July 30, 11:00 a.m. at Northern Hills Church in San Antonio, Texas.
On Sunday, July 30, Deaf Church at Northern Hills will not be meeting in the Chapel, but instead will meet at its usual time, in the auditorium with the other congregation for this combined sermon.
Reverend Sam Carpenter, Pastor of Deaf Church at Norther Hills Church, a United Methodist congregation, in San Antonio, Texas will be the preacher during the combined Deaf and hearing service at 11:00 a.m.
Sunday, July 30.
In addition to being the pastor of Deaf Church at Norther Hills for three years, Pastor Sam has been a police officer and detective for 33 years, also serving as an interpreter for the San Antonio Police Department. Because of his concern for equal access for the Deaf, Northern Hills asked him three years ago to pastor the Deaf Church which has now been conducting services in American Sign Language for nine years. To serve as a full-time pastor, Sam Carpenter also completed the ordination process to become an ordained United Methodist local pastor–a process which he describes as being even much more rigorous than being selected and trained as a police officer.
Sam Carpenter is retiriring from the San Antonio Police Department this month to devote his full energies to the Deaf Church at Northern Hills activities and membership.
The Deaf Church at Northern Hills normally meets in the Chapel the first, second, third (and fifth when there is one) Sundays of each month. Most months Deaf Church meets with the hearing church on the fourth Sunday, using ASL interpreters. This month Deaf Church will not meet in the Chapel on the fifth Sunday, but will instead attend the hearing service where its Pastor Sam Carpenter will be preaching in American Sign Language.
All are invited to attend. Child care assistance and ushering using ASL are available. The sermon will be voice interpreted for the hearing.
