CHILDREN NEEDED AS VOLUNTEERS FOR RESEARCH STUDY
Children are needed to participate in a research study at the University of Texas at Dallas Callier Center. This study entitled “Development of Cross-Modal Plasticity in Prelingually Deaf Children”, examines the competition during development between the visual and auditory systems in the brain.
Requirements for Participation
Children who were born severe to profoundly deaf, or became severe to profoundly deaf before the age of one, who are currently between the ages of 3 and 15 are needed to help with this project. Children who are severe to profoundly deaf must use sign language as their primary mode of communication. All participants must have at least 20/40 corrected vision (with glasses or contacts) and have no developmental or neurological disorders (as this may affect the results).
Benefits of Participation
Participants in this study will be compensated for their time and effort in the amount of $10 per hour.
Testing Procedures
Participation in the study includes measuring the brain wave response to visual stimuli. A recording of your child’s brain waves is made using an electrode cap (similar to a swim cap). Your child will be asked to sit in a chair and watch a cartoon in the middle of a video screen and push a button when they see a box appear on the screen. The time required for participation in this study is about one and one-half hours. Children will be given frequent breaks. Your child will also receive a vision screening and a handedness test.
