4TH ANNUAL AUSTIN ART CAR PARADE
Keeping Austin Weird and Mobile
Austin, Texas: With over 100 art cars and thousands in live audience spectators, the Austin Art Car Parade is one of Austin’s finest public art events. On October 21, the lavishly decked-out creations will glitter the streets of South Congress Avenue. The Art Car Parade is free for all and open to the public.
The parade starts at 11:30 a.m. beginning at 3rd and Congress Ave will proceed south on Congress Ave to the Congress Avenue Baptist Church parking lot on 1511 S. Congress, just opposite South Congress Cafe.
The event has already attracted the attention of famous artists as far away as California and Kentucky and as close to home as Austin and Houston. It’s truly a community event — everyone who makes a decorated, augmented, or otherwise decked-out wheeled vehicle can participate.
Other parade events include an exclusive Artist and VIP party at Austin Museum of Art (AMOA) Downtown on Friday, October 20, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. There will be delicious food by Maudie’s Tex-Mex, drinks by Real Ale Brewing and the Texas Hill Country Wineries, a live musical performance by Quiet Company, and access to AMOA exhibits featuring works by Mary Lee Bendolph, Lu Ann Barrow, and William Kentridge. Art Car entries will be parked in reserved spaces on Congress Ave throughout the evening.
There will also be a post-parade “Car”nival on Oct. 21, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. with live entertainment by the Austin Dance Company, Attic Ted and Quiet Company, along with art booths, activities, food vendors, and more. “Car”nival attendees will also have a chance to create an art car on the spot! Anyone with a passion for art and a thing for mobile machines is invited to share their art and have some fun.
This year’s parade will support VSA arts of Texas, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to create a society where people with disabilities can learn through, participate in, and enjoy the arts. VSA arts of Texas is a member of the international network of VSA arts, an affiliate of The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
If you don’t have an art car or aren’t the artistic type, ask us how you can be a volunteer or sponsor one of the main events! But if you are looking for some out-of-the ordinary fun, this is it. Check out the Austin Art Car Parade Website www.austinartcar.com or call us at 512.459.4070.
Special thanks to our generous sponsors: AMOA, Austin Dance Co., Grande Communications, KOOP 91.7FM, Real Ale Brewing Co., Maudie’s, Texas Commission on the Arts, and the Texas Hill Country Wineries.
