How Do I Know When I’m REALLY Interpreting?? Techniques for Improving an Expressive Target

Insufficient Enrollment Policy: Fees will be refunded if less than 20 participants register and/or workshop cancels.

Cancellation Policy: If there is sufficient enrollment, all registration fees are non-refundable. All cancellations must be in writing. Registrations may not be transferred.

Target Audience: Intermediate to Advanced Interpreters (Level I will be allowed, however, the workshop content and level of difficulty will target advanced participants).

The workshop is designed for seasoned practitioners who want to improve their expressive skills when interpreting; specifically to identify when and how to incorporate the 7 expansion techniques created by Shelley Lawrence and when and how to culturally mediate a target text. Participants will be led through lecture and a variety of activities to apply expressive interpreting techniques. Demonstration and practice of interpreting models will be offered. Focus will be on connotative meaning in ASL.
Participants will be divided into small groups. Portions of the workshop may be presented in ASL.
Participants will: Define terms pertaining to expressive interpreting: Interpreting, Transliterating and CVE forms interpreting and transliterating.

Demonstrate ability to create equivalent targets using expansion techniques
Expand Interpreting Range

Provide techniques and strategies to incorporate expansion techniques into expressive interpreting
Objectively identify linguistic and grammatical features of ASL that should be included in EACH target production.

Identify when and why expansion is necessary

TSID is an Approved RID CMP Sponsor for Continuing Education Activities. This Professional Studies program is offered for .6 CEUs at the Some Content Knowledge Level.
