November is “National Adoption Month”

‘Why Not Me?’ Campaign Seeks Foster and Adoptive Families for CPS Kids

November 6, 2006

During November, National Adoption Month, DFPS is launching a new statewide adoption campaign called “Why Not Me?” It’s a question hundreds of older foster children awaiting adoption ask every day.

DFPS’ Child Protective Services program has approximately 3,900 abused or neglected children in desperate need of the love and stability an adoptive family can provide. Almost half of these children are 10 years of age or older.

As a child gets older, his or her need for a family does not diminish. Take 12-year old Dereece, an extraordinary child with a bright future ahead of him. Yet he needs a family to guide and nurture him, as much today as he did when he was a toddler.

Texas needs foster and adoptive parents for children of all ages. Some of these children have special medical, physical or emotional needs. With more than 100 children who are deaf or hard of hearing in foster care, there is a special need for foster and adoptive parents who know American Sign Language.

This year, CPS was awarded a $4 million grant by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department for increasing the adoption of foster children in 2005. CPS is plowing more than half that money back into the local initiatives responsible for the increase in adoption and into the “Why Not Me?” public awareness campaign. The rest will fund adoptions services in the future.

Across Texas, mass adoption ceremonies, adoption expos, Heart Gallery events and other gatherings are taking place to encourage adoption during Adoption Awareness Month. Every weekday in November, DFPS will post a “Child of the Day” available for adoption on http://www.adoptchildren.org.

In support of those efforts, throughout November, The Connection will feature health and human services employees who share their stories about fostering or adopting children from CPS. We’ll also spotlight children in need of loving “forever families” each week.

We encourage you to check out the foster children awaiting adoption on the Texas Adoption Resource Exchange website at www.adoptchildren.org. Information about what it takes to become a licensed foster/adoptive parent is available at the Adoption and Foster Care page on the DFPS website.
