Dr. Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Galloway at TAD Conference 2007

ANNOUNCEMENT FROM THE TAD CONFERENCE:

Another fantastic presenter, during the upcoming TAD Conference, June 21 – 23, at the Hilton Arlington, is Dr. Gertrude ‘Gertie’ Galloway. She will give her presentation, Friday morning, June 22nd, on “LIFE DOES NOT STOP AT RETIREMENT”.

Here is some information about Gertie:

Gertie was born in Washington, DC, to Deaf parents. She has two Deaf siblings. Gertie attended Kendall School and Gallaudet College. She graduated with a BA degree in Education in 1951 and currently has three grown children.

Upon graduation from Gallaudet she worked as an auditing clerk, keypunch operator and as a verifier in various aircraft companies.

Gertie then later returned to Western Maryland College for her masters in Deaf Education and graduated in 1973. She then taught Mathematics at the Maryland School for the Deaf and later became their Assistant Principal of the Elementary Department at the MD School for the Deaf/Columbia campus where she was instrumental in developing a Special Needs program at the MSD/Columbia campus.

Later Gertie decided to attend Gallaudet University for her doctorate and she received her Ph.D. in Special Education Administration in 1993.

Afterwards she was appointed as the Superintendent at the Marie H.Katzenbach School for the Deaf, at Trenton, NJ. Gertie served in this position for 9 years and retired in 1999.

Meanwhile Gertie has participated in numerous organizations; such as, president of the Maryland Association of the Deaf; as well as, the president of three national organizations, National Association for the Deaf (1980-1982), the Conference of the Educational Administrators of the Schools and Programs for the Deaf (1995-1997) and the Deaf Seniors of America, Inc. (1999-2005). She is currently on the board of TAD.

She is also the recipients of many awards which include; the Dan Cloud award, CSUN; the George Bailer Award, Western Maryland College; the George W. Nevil award, Pennsylvania School for the Deaf; the Distinguished Service award, CSUN; the PKZ sorority, ‘Woman of the Year ‘ award, the Agatha Tiegel Hansen award, and an Honorary Doctorate in Letter of Laws, all three from Gallaudet University.
