Texoma Council for the Deaf Newsletter
March 2007
Welcome to the Texoma Council for the Deaf (TCD) in Sherman/Denison, Texas. The Texoma Council for the Deaf is in Grayson, Fannin, and Cooke Counties in Texas and Bryan County in Oklahoma. Deaf, Hard of Hearing, American Sign Language Students or Interpreters, Deaf children with parents and Oral people are welcome to be involved in our club.
Many people thought that TCD was “dead”, but it is not. For your information, TCD has not been closed down. There just hasn’t been any advertising about the organization. It still stands strong since 1976 and has activities and board meetings. We are working very hard step by step to let people know that TCD is still there.
The year of 2007 has started much better, because there are new faces involved from outside our counties. It was the beginning and will climb by the time to time. Also we hope that it will be continue to be successful in the future.
The TCD would like anyone from our counties and outside of the counties to join our non-profit organization (Deaf Club) to help us to get stronger and get involved in board meetings and activities and/or donate for our TCD fund.
Of Course, TCD have OFFICERS, MEMBERS and non members. The official President of TCD in 2007 is Lisa Wynn. Lisa Wynn was very excited to become President of TCD and is learning to be involved with the community, activities, and politics. She has the goal for TCD to keep growing stronger with members or non-members and getting more funds in the future. This is her first time to be involved in the community for TCD but she has experience as Vice President of Student Government Associate and President of Sophomore class in junior college. She comes from west of Texas and moved to Sherman,Texas in 1996. She would like to tell you information about TCD that members have very good teamwork and cooperation because we believe that “WE CAN DO IT”.
When we (TCD members) set up our first summer deaf picnic in Denison, Texas in 2005, it was a very small group. Members had faith and did not give up. We continued planning for the summer deaf picnic at Munson Park in Denison, Texas in 2006. We increased more people and it was successful because there were approximately 50 people who attended from all over Texas. Anyway, this year of 2007, we hope to increase even more people to come and expect to get 75 to 100 people to meet new and old faces. Munson Park was the best park because of the metal roof so it doesn’t matter if it’s sunny, hot or raining. It also has the biggest room for cement tables and benches and playground for the kids to play. This year the executive officers already have been discussing adding more activities for kids to have fun and also for adults too.
Lisa Wynn prefers to say ‘We” instead of “I” because she believes that we (TCD Members) work very hard as teamwork and cooperation as well. We are always there to help out and set it up.
Remember the words we always say to “BE FAITH AND BE POSITIVE”.
Lisa would like to welcome 2007 TCD Vice President, Scott Randolph. He comes from the outside Chicago, Illinois and moved toTexas 5 years ago.
Scott worked for WSAD as a helper for their activities. He was also the coach for the WSAD softball team and played as the left fielder. That team won 2nd place in 1994 in Michigan. He is very excited to be involved with TCD members. He is very friendly, creative, enthusiastic and supportive person. He is working hard to get more funds and activities for TCD. Scott was the first person to set up the ‘social night’ for TCD. Hopefully we can make it more successful by getting more people to attend or be involved with the social night. He would like to see more new faces come and enjoy our TCD. Also, He has a goal to set up a website for TCD in the future. The executive officers will help and provide feedback about what has been done and what information to put into the program.
Lisa Wynn would like to welcome 2007 TCD Treasurer, Sheila Bills. She comes from northwest of Texas before moving to Denison, Texas. She is a very hard worker, believes in teamwork and concentrates on our TCD funds into two different accounts. She is very good organized person. She learned about income tax for non profit organization for TCD. We have good news to tell you that we received Tax Permit and non-profit Texas Sales for 2007. Lisa Wynn believes that Sheila is a very good treasurer and trusts her. Sheila knows how to handle the funds. Lisa Wynn would like to inform you that Sheila Bills was chairperson for our Christmas Party for three years and made it successful. In 2006, her successes included 37 donated door prizes and we also sold the raffles for the first time. Sheila was very surprised that she had 3 brand new Sidekick
3 devices at the Christmas party. Everyone at the last Christmas party wanted to do it again in 2007. We have to discuss something new and hope to get more door prizes. Sheila said she’s ready to work hard and prepare for our 2007 Christmas party.
Our goals include having our own office, new supplies, and equipment such as a computer, laptop etc., for our TCD. We also hope to have more funds for the future. We will try our best to provide a Monthly Newsletter to let you know what’s going on with our TCD.
If you are not a member and are interested in becoming a TCD member, send us your contact information so we can send you information including our TCD Newsletters, events, and social night around Sherman/Denison in Texas. Or you can check out at the deaf network that advertises about our TCD activities or events.
If you are interested to donating the money for our TCD, please email Lisa at [email protected]. We appreciate your donation.
We are looking for volunteers to become the secretary and the event coordinator for our TCD. If anyone is interested in either of these positions, please email Lisa, the president. We are looking for someone who is willing and motivated to fill these positions.
If you have ideas or comments on how to help improve our TCD to provide better service to members and non-members, please send them to Lisa.
Thank you for your input.
We want to say thank you to each member who helps and supports our TCD.
Thank you
Lisa Wynn
