Announcing the Deaf Services Program at SafePlace

On February 18, 2008, access to SafePlace services for Deaf survivors
of sexual and domestic violence will expand. The Deaf Services program
now includes two Deaf staff members with experience working with
survivors – Jeannie Brown, Deaf Services Advocacy Coordinator and
Vonnie Basham, Deaf Services Counseling Coordinator. Jeannie and
Vonnie will take the beginning of the year to introduce the community
to the services SafePlace offers.

Services offered by Deaf Services staff will include individual
counseling, advocacy, support groups, and parenting classes for women
and men who have experienced domestic violence or sexual assault.

Shelter and transitional housing services will also still be
available through SafePlace. At SafePlace, we practice
confidentiality about clients and services they access so that people
are safe and can discuss

their options about unhealthy or abusive relationships. The Deaf
community will have choices about working with a SafePlace counselor
or advocate fluent in ASL or working with a hearing staff member
through an interpreter.

On Thursday, January 24, 2008 from 5:30 to 7:30 pm, SafePlace invites
the Deaf community for an Open House to learn more about SafePlace and
the services we provide. SafePlace is located at 1515A Grove Blvd.
There will be light refreshments and door prize giveaways. Please
RSVP to either Jeannie or Vonnie by January 18th. If you have
accommodation requests for the open house, please let us know by
January 18th.

Jeannie and Vonnie can be reached at [email protected]

and [email protected]

SafePlaces 24 hour crisis hotline is 267-7233 (voice) or 927-9616
(TTY)

SafePlace exists to end sexual and domestic violence through safety,
healing, prevention and social change. We envision a community free
of rape, sexual abuse and domestic violence.
