Local deaf community applauds silent Super Bowl ad

Updated: 2/3/2008

The idea for the commercial came from some of PepsiCo’s deaf
employees.

Don’t reach to turn up the volume, one Pepsi commercial is supposed
to be silent.

It’s filmed entirely in American Sign Language.

The ad includes a popular joke in the deaf community.

Members of the Texas School for the Deaf said the commercial has been
the talk of the deaf community, ever since they were told about it a
week ago.

Texas School for the Deaf’s Walt Camenisch said it’s great to see the
deaf community represented.

“I think this is great exposure,” Camenisch said. “For the deaf
community to have this kind of commercial, I think it’s a really neat
thing for Super Bowl day. I mean it’s such a special day already. You
know, there’s a lot of money that goes into those advertisements. So
the idea that the deaf are a part of that, I think it’s great.”

The idea for the commercial came from some of PepsiCo’s own deaf
employees.

American Sign Language is said to be the fourth most commonly used
language in the United States.
