Talk About Your Work: A Peer-to-Peer collaboration

10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

“How was that?” Interpreters often ask themselves this question
during and after an assignment. How do you talk about your work? What
questions do you ask? What would other professional colleagues have to
say about your work product? This collaborative session will afford
participants the opportunity to openly and freely talk about their
work product. Feedback and mediated questioning designed to aid the

interpreter with thinking about the processes of the texts as well as
peer-to-peer discussion will be the main format of the workshop.
Focused discussion may include:

• How did you decide to formulate that sign combination for that
phrase?

• At what point did you realize the semantic intent of the phrase
and choose to restructure your interpretation?

• Talk about the factors that led you to decide not to include that
part of the message in your final product.

• Can you recall how many times classifiers were used in that
segment of the discourse?

• Model texts may be taken from a variety of community-based
interpreting situations.

• Sample interpretations may be requested from volunteers from the
group.

• And more!

This workshop is designed to benefit a wide range of skills among
interpreters. It is offered at the “intermediate” level. It is
recommended that participants be comfortable speaking and signing for
themselves in a large group environment. Certified interpreters,
Certified Deaf interpreters

and trilingual interpreters are encouraged to attend.

This 5-hour workshop will offer 0.5 CEUs/CMPs (BEI and RID) pending
approval.
