FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
STUDENT VISUAL ARTS SHOW AT TEXAS SCHOOL FOR THE DEAF
GALLERY OPEN LATE FOR FIRST THURSDAY ON SOUTH CONGRESS
Austin, Texas – April 29, 2008 Student art work is on display and
open to the public at the Texas School for the Deaf’s (TSD) annual
spring Visual Arts Show, though Friday May 2. In TSD’s Kleberg
Gallery, student’s works include art, woodworking, photography,
digital graphics, multimedia, and a number of student produced videos
from TSD’s Impact Studio.
Also among student works, TSD shows the “Deaf Artists in the
Community and Schools” collection, on exhibit in Austin thanks to
Lamar University in Beaumont and a grant from the National Endowment
for the Arts. Visitors will see works from eight well-known deaf
artists, as well as pieces produced by students that range from
photographs, sculptures and paintings to multimedia, animation and Web
design. The collection aims to encourage a greater focus on deaf art
in deaf education as well as an appreciation and understanding of deaf
culture. TSD Senior, DeLasha Singleton says, “this art show is a
fantastic example of Deaf Culture. I wish everyone in Austin would
come and see it.”
Working all semester, student’s anticipation has been building for
this public debut of their own. Many of the student artists were
astounded when they entered the Visual Arts Show for the first time
themselves. A recently transformed plain, dull meeting room, The
Kelberg Gallery space is a complimentary backdrop for the student’s
art. “This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to have our
work displayed with such famous Deaf Artists”, says Felina Ruiz, TSD
Senior. “Their work really challenges us to think more about the
depth of our own ideas and pushes us to be serious about our work.”
