INTERPRETER FOR THE DEAF
BEI (Board for Evaluation of Interpreters) CERTIFIED
Qualifications:
High School Diploma or GED equivalency
Associate’s degree or higher related to Interpreting or the field
of deafness preferred.
Certificate in Interpreting issued by either the Division of Deaf
and Hard of Hearing services (BEI) or the Registry of Interpreters for
the Deaf (RID).
Experience working with children.
Terms of employment: Probationary/Term Contract: 187 days
Salary: Salary Range (based on experience) as set by the board of
directors for the school year 2007-2008.
Minimum $21,527 — Midpoint $25,267 — Maximum $29,007

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Interpret/transliterate according to the specifications of the
student’s Individualized Education
Program (IEP).
Be informed, monitor and report to the deaf education itinerant
teacher when concerns arise about the student’s modifications as
approved by the Admissions Review Dismissal Committee (ARD).
Become and remain well-versed in course material in order to
demonstrate competency in
interpreting/or transliterating.
Interact in a professional manner with administrators, teachers,
staff, students, visitors, or
individuals unfamiliar with the educational setting.
Assist with In Class Support in the mainstream setting of General
Education or Special Education.
Assist in providing general supervision to deaf students.
Demonstrate flexibility when role shifts take place (ie. in class
support vs. interpreting in the
classroom).
Participate in continuing professional growth as required by the
certification governing body (TX
Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing).
Demonstrate professionalism in all ethical areas, especially in
applying the Interpreter Code of
Ethics to the educational setting.
Perform other duties as assigned by the teacher, principal, Special
Ed Coordinator of the Humble Regional Day School for the Deaf, or as
determined by specific are of assignment.
