Sign Language Convention 7/25 thru 7/27/08

News Release for Sign Language Convention 7/25 thru 7/27/08

July 15, 2008

Thousands to be “Guided” to Dallas for Witnesses’ first annual
3-day event in American Sign Language

Denton, TX—An estimated 2,000 attendees from a dozen south-central
states ranging from Colorado to Tennessee will come to the Denton
Texas Assembly Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses for a three-day event
focusing on finding reliable guidance. What makes this convention
unique from the 304 others like it being held throughout the United
States this summer is its presentation entirely in American Sign
Language. In previous years, the Deaf and others who communicate using
ASL have traveled to California, Florida and New Jersey for this
annual event. With the addition of Texas, those who previously
traveled some distance for this event in ASL will more readily be able
to take in the encouraging information presented during the three
days.

Jehovah’s Witnesses will host this first annual Sign Language
convention at the Denton Texas Assembly Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses
beginning Friday, July 25, 2008 at 9:20 a.m and continuing through
Sunday, July 27. The 2008 “Guided by God’s Spirit” District
Convention is open to the public and all are invited to attend any
portion or the entire program. For those individuals who are both deaf
and blind, tactile interpreting will be made available. Admission to
the convention is free, and no collections will be taken. The program
will focus on why reliable guidance is needed today and where people
can turn to for trustworthy advice in all aspects of life.

Witnesses from the 36 Sign Language congregations and groups
attending this event in Denton anticipate an excellent turnout in view
of the newly added central location. This is especially so since the
2007 convention, which had the theme “Follow the Christ!”, was
very enthusiastically received on the West and East Coast. Witnesses
also look forward to welcoming many non-Witnesses to the convention.
Witnesses believe that all who attend will benefit from the practical
information presented.

Previously mentioned, throughout the United States there will be 305
conventions in 76 cities. Worldwide, there are nearly 7,000,000
Witnesses in over 101,000 congregations. In 2007, more than 12 million
people attended over 3,200 of the Witnesses’ conventions around the
world.
