Hurricane Ike Information & Help

Hurricane Ike Information & Help

Texans,

Are you prepared for Hurricane Ike?

If you live in the coastal bend, be prepared for Hurricane Ike. If
your city tells you to evacuate, please do so for your safety. Pay
attention to the weather channel or sign up for Accessible Hazard
Alert System- Individual Notification (AHAS-IN) at
http://deaflink.com/ahas/ahas.html
. AHAS-IN will notify you through e-mail or text messaging about
emergencies. You can also view an ASL video explaining what AHAS-IN is
about.

If you need a ride or a place to stay, call the Texas Information and
Referral Service at 2-1-1 or 1-877-541-7905 through relay. They will
help you find a ride out or a shelter to stay at until everything is
over.

Whether you decide to evacuate or not, there are some things you
should do to prepare for the hurricane:

– Board up your home. Use at least ½ inch plywood to board up any
windows or glass doors in your home. Sometimes insurance companies
will not cover hurricane damages if the individual did not take action
to protect their home! Be proactive.

– Pick up any loose items in your yard. Protect your home and
yourself from flying debris during the hurricane or tornadoes that may
develop after the hurricane. Even a small piece of plastic can be
deadly.

– Take pictures of all your valuables you will not be taking with
you. If something happens to your home, you will have evidence of your
valuables for your insurance company.

– Load up on canned/non-perishable foods and clean bottled water.
Even if you’re evacuating, make sure you have plenty of food you can
return home to. When you return back home from your evacuation, you
may not have any electricity or clean running water for weeks.

– Do all of your laundry and dishes. Like mentioned before, you may
not have any electricity or clean water for weeks so load up on clean
clothes and dishes that will last you for a while.

– Load up on battery-powered or wind-up flashlights and batteries.
When the electricity goes out, you will need some light to help you
out. Do not use candles as they can set your house on fire and then
you’ll have no shelter from the hurricane.

– Fill up your car and plan your evacuation route. Make sure you’re
ready to go at a moment’s notice and know where you go.

– Take important things with you when you evacuate. Don’t forget to
bring your prescription medicine, medical supplies, important
documents (including driver’s license, Social Security card, proof
of residence, insurance information, wills, deeds, birth and marriage
certificates, etc.), bedding, clothing, your mobile phone, extra
batteries, flashlights, canned food and bottled water, your car keys,
and maps. You may not need some of these things for where you’re
evacuating to, but you may need them when you come back home.

– Communicate with your family and close friends. Make sure people
know where you are in case of an emergency (other than the hurricane).
If you are following family or friends during evacuation, pick a
meeting place in case the group gets separated.

– Pay attention to tornadoes that may occur during or after the
hurricane. Tornadoes are the most dangerous things that can kill or
injure people during or after a hurricane. Stay inside of a room that
has no windows and is in the closest to the middle of the house.

You can find more information about how to prepare and survive
through a hurricane on the internet. Think before you do something.
Help each other. Please be careful.

Sincerely,

Katherine Murch
