Brazoswood Students

Brazoswood students

sign on for new skill set

There are a lot of positive signs at Brazoswood High School. And many
of them are coming out of teacher Barry Darrell’s classroom.

Darrell, who is deaf, teaches an American Sign Language course that
not only trains students in the mechanics of “speaking” with their
hands and facial expressions, but also explores the culture of the
deaf world and how it relates to that of the hearing.

Apparently, he is good at what he does. The students at Brazoswood
certainly consider him an asset.

“He’s pretty cool and he’s pretty funny, too,” freshman Derek
D’Arcangeli told The Facts. “Over the past two weeks I have
learned quite a bit. He’s a pretty good teacher.”

Senior Kristen Gary, who is Darrell’s assistant, echoes that
sentiment. “He’s a very good teacher,” she said. “He’s funny
and energetic and the kids enjoy him.”

Darrell imparts his valuable knowledge with the use of worksheets, a
demonstration board and — most effectively — by getting his
students actively involved in the classroom where one is apt to see
hands waving, fingers flying and faces contorting into every
conceivable emotion at any given time of the day.

“I hope that my students will learn new things about the deaf
culture and the differences between American Sign Language and
English,” Darrell said.

Brazoswood students are lucky to have someone on campus who can
introduce them to that mysterious realm, and teach them a practical
skill at the same time.
