Hearing Loss Group Marks Anniversary
The Greater Tyler Area chapter of Hearing Loss Association of America
has scheduled its five-year anniversary celebration, to be held at
10:30 a.m.-noon Saturday, Nov. 8, in the Genecov Room, Tyler Area
Chamber of Commerce, 315 N. Broadway Ave., Tyler.
Guest speaker will be Doug Dittfurth, TX DARS-Office for Deaf and
Hard of Hearing Services, who will talk about the services his office
provides to persons who are deaf or hard of hearing in Texas, said
Daphne Smith, HLA/GTA vice president.
The Hearing Loss Association of America is a nonprofit, educational
association that speaks out for people with hearing loss. The
association supports quality of communication and quality of life, Ms.
Smith said.
“The local chapter (Greater Tyler Area) is made of people of every
age, from every walk of life who share one thing in common — a desire
to help people with hearing loss live better, fuller lives,” she said.
Monthly topic discussions include how to manage hearing loss,
assistive technology, services available, as well as other pertinent
topics. People who are deaf, late deafened, or hard of hearing are
welcome, as well as family, friends or professionals. Sign language
interpreters and CART (real-time captioning) is provided to ensure
everyone can understand what is being said, Ms. Smith said.
Meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month except July.
Contact Ms. Smith at [email protected]
or the adviser Melissa Bell at 903-534-1222.
