Parents and Advocates working on behalf of individuals with
disabilities often meet for hours with educators and service providers
to plan effective education and support services and to negotiate the
“when, where, who and how much” effective services will require.
Though the teachers and others at the table also want what is best for
our children, most of us are unprepared for these roles and may find
that we feel overwhelmed and discouraged before we even begin! Others
have felt intimidated or have had negative experiences that undermined
their confidence.
This two-day training will provide participants with sound
communication approaches and negotiating tools that will contribute to
increased effectiveness and successful outcomes. Participants will
learn about the various communication roles team members may utilize,
the seven types of conflict that occur in our communications and
interactions, and how to match their negotiating and communication
styles and strategies to the problem to be solved or conflict to be
resolved. The training will provide an active learning environment,
with ample opportunities for practice and “gentle” group activities
and critiques that will serve to build a supportive communication
community where we can learn and improve together.
